Jedi Knight priest gives Star Wars blessing at the altar

Flashback Friday-2013

Munich - Jedi knights at the altar: a parish priest follows the "Star Wars" path during a communion celebration - and inspires the churchgoers with his new approach.

At the celebration of a First Communion in the parish grouping of Vier Brunnen (St. Stephan in Putzbrunn, St. Ulrich in Gasbrunn, St. Magdalena in Ottobrunn and St. Stephanus in Hohenbrunn), parish leader, Nicolas Gkotses resorted to an unusual means: During the celebration, a bright green laser sword, which might be familiar to fans of the film series "Star Wars", was used. Children and parents were delighted with the rather unusual way of organising the communion celebration.

The 28-year-old got the idea for the Star Wars service from the children themselves: "I know the children from religion lessons at school. And after the lesson there was always only one topic: Star Wars. The Gospel has to be proclaimed in this day and age, so you should also be able to present its contents in new ways." Father Christoph Nobs agreed with this opinion - and took up the light sabre idea for the blessing without further ado.

Nevertheless: "You have to be careful with a sword in church," Nicolas Gkotses knows. That is why he dealt with the subject very sensitively. Whether the Communion children will be able to enjoy the Star Wars blessing next year is still up in the air.
