Swiss Bishops Conference welcome the Papal decision

Schweizer Bischöfe begrüssen Papst-Entscheid

The Swiss Bishops' Conference sees in the lifting of the excommunication the way open to the overcoming of the split, said a statement signed by the President, Bishop Kurt Koch.

And from the statement itself, the key ending

Pope Benedict XVI. was led to his decision by the conviction that after the recognition of the Magisterium and the authority of the Pope, there were good prospects that the forthcoming discussions would reach agreement on the outstanding issues regarding the mandatory adoption of the Second Vatican Council . In this way, the complete reconciliation in full communion on the basis of their common faith would find its visible expression. I hope and pray that this reconciliation will happen.

The Backlash begins.

Official Latin Mass groups respond to lifting of excommunications

Cathcon translation of Ein mutiger Entschluss - a Brave Decision.

The Editor spoke with Professor Georg May, canon lawyer, Dr. Gerald Göschen, Superior of the Institute of St. Philip Neri, and Father Engelbert Recktenwald FSSP, a former member of the Society of St. Pius X and co-founder of the Fraternity of St. Peter, a priest, about their expectations for the further integration process between the Society of St. Pius X. and the Vatican.

Professor May said at the beginning of the interview that the retraction of the excommunication was a step of great importance: "There is a very courageous and far-sighted decision of the Holy. Father. This decision will guarantee him a lot of complaints". He added: "I'm obviously pleased when people who have internally or externally distanced themselves from the Church again find a way to the Church. I can only hope that the magnanimity of the Holy Father will also be rewarded." May underlined in this context that he now sees the requirement to act on the part of the priests of the Society: "One must hope that the bishops come forward to the Holy Father and give up some rigidities of the past, so as to participate with the Holy Father in the renewal of the world and the richly blessed work of the Church"

Even Fr Engelbert Recktenwald FSSP is convinced that the Society of St Pius X will now be reconciled to the Vatican: "I think the Pope has done the utmost that he could do to help them to come forward. From his side, everything is done. But you need to reconcile the two. Now the Society is also on the move" said Fr Recktenwald to kathnews. Father Recktenwald refers particularly to the recent decree of the Congregation of Bishops: "I hope that this step of the Pope really is the beginning of a reconciliation. As the decree of today's Saturday notes, the separation between the Society and the Church still remains. It is now up to the priests of the Society of St. Pius X, how they receive it and how they respond to the outstretched hand of the Holy Father.

Next para to follow.

Vatican-holocaust denial totally unacceptable

According to the press spokesman, Fr Lombardi. Report on Radio Vatican. Rest of the article contains nothing new. He also says "This is all about another process"

The Chairman of the Catholic Bishops Conference in Germany has welcomed the move, doubtless through gritted if not grinding teeth.

He says the Pope has extended a hand to the Society of St Pius X and he hopes they accept it back.

"The Pope shows the possibility of return to full communion with the Catholic Church and also without doubt that the decisions of the Second Vatican Council are an indispensable basis for the life of the Church."

Cathcon-correction the indispensable bases are rather Scripture, Tradition and Magisterium.

Archbishop of Paris also welcomes the move. Considering the whole episode started under pressure from the French this is big news.

"I am delighted. This is an opportunity, a door open to allow Christians to find the fullness of communion with the Church. As long as they want or they accept it. It is a gesture of mercy and a gesture of openness to strengthen the unity of the Church."

Pope is taking a hugh risk, according to Holy Smoke.

The International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism based in Paris said even before today that this would be "hugh step backward" for the Church.

Up until a few days ago, the official Catholic news agency in Austria put inverted commas around the title of bishop when referring to the four bishops. They have now stopped this practice!

Pope has revoked the excommunications of the SSPX bishops

Report from the official Italian news agency here.

A very swift translation
Pope Benedict XVI, as announced by the press in recent days, has lifted the excommunication' latae sententiae ' of the four schismatic bishops ordained in 1988 by Msgr. Lefebvre.

According to the revocation of the excommunication, which was signed by the Prefect of the Congregation of Bishops on January 21, the Pontiff being ''paternally sensible to the spiritual discomfort expressed by those involved in the sanction of excommunication from the commitment and confident in what they expressed in the aforementioned letter to spare no effort to investigate the necessary discussions with the authorities' of the Holy See of the outstanding questions, so 'that we can soon reach a full and satisfactory solution to the problem at its source, has decided to reconsider the canonical situation of Bishops Bernard Fellay, Bernard Tissier de Mallerais, Richard Williamson and Alfonso de Galarreta''.

''With this act – according to the decree – he wishes to consolidate the relations of mutual trust and to intensify and give stability to the relationship of the Society of St. Pius X with the Apostolic See. This gift of peace, after the Christmas celebrations, will also be a sign of promoting the unity 'in love' of the universal Church and of removing the scandal of division''

The Pope did not know about the Williamson interview

Cathcon translation of the relevant paragraph of
Benedikt XVI. will vier exkommunizierte Bischöfe zurück in die Kirche holen, unter ihnen ist ein Rechtsextremer - Heikler Gnadenakt des Papstes - Nachrichten - Benedict XVI will bring four excommunicated bishops back into the Church, one of whom is a right wing extremist. Delicate act of forgiveness by the Pope.

Since the statements of Williamson became common knowledge said Fr Eberhard von Gemmingen, director of the German section of Radio Vatican, the step should not be interpreted as a change of the Pope to the right. Benedict had certainly signed the officially not yet confirmed decree without knowledge of Williamson's statements. "I understand it much more as a step of the Pope to build bridges and to create peace.

And from an article in the Bavarian press.
Fr Peter Frey, the regens of the seminary has refused to confirm whether the interview took place on his property. He has however confirmed that there was a Swedish TV crew present at the deaconing.

This is not surprising given the police investigation.

Te Deum in thanksgiving for the lifting of the excommunications

O God, we praise Thee, and acknowledge Thee to be the supreme Lord.
Everlasting Father, all the earth worships Thee.
All the Angels, the heavens and all angelic powers,
All the Cherubim and Seraphim, continuously cry to Thee:
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts!
Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty of Thy glory.
The glorious choir of the Apostles,
The wonderful company of Prophets,
The white-robed army of Martyrs, praise Thee.
Holy Church throughout the world acknowledges Thee:
The Father of infinite Majesty;
Thy adorable, true and only Son;
Also the Holy Spirit, the Comforter.
O Christ, Thou art the King of glory!
Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father.
When Thou tookest it upon Thyself to deliver man,
Thou didst not disdain the Virgin's womb.
Having overcome the sting of death, Thou opened the Kingdom of Heaven to all
Thou sitest at the right hand of God in the glory of the Father.
We believe that Thou willst come to be our Judge.
We, therefore, beg Thee to help Thy servants whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy
Precious Blood.
Let them be numbered with Thy Saints in everlasting glory.

V. Save Thy people, O Lord, and bless Thy inheritance!
R. Govern them, and raise them up forever.

V. Every day we thank Thee.
R. And we praise Thy Name forever, yes, forever and ever.

V. O Lord, deign to keep us from sin this day.
R. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

V. Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, for we have hoped in Thee.
R. O Lord, in Thee I have put my trust; let me never be put to shame.
