Cathcon- there are plenty of fellow monks and male oblates whose feet he can wash- but no, unlike Jesus, he chooses a woman.

A friend on facebook reports that the churches in her neighbourhood had only just started to implement some of the rules handed down, or clarified, under Benedict. "Now it's all gone to pot again. Almost literally overnight."

Pope has angered conservative Catholics- Der Spiegel Online cites Cathcon

It was a break with canon law: Pope Francis celebrated the Mass of the Lord's Supper in a juvenile prison in Rome - and washed the feet of two women. The liturgy provides that only men's feet must be washed. Now the Vatican must appease conservative critics.

Pope Francis has apparently angered the conservative wing of the Catholic Church. On Thursday evening, he celebrated in the chapel of the Roman youth prison Casal del Marmo the Mass of the Last Supper. He washed the feet of twelve prisoners . The taboo: Among them were two women. The liturgy for Easter , however, provides expressly that only men's feet must be washed.

"It sets a questionable example," wrote Edward Peters, a consultant to the Vatican on canon law, on his blog . "It is an issue with implications well beyond the foot washing," warned Peters. Basically, the Pope send the signal: "Why seek a necessary but difficult reform of the law, if you can simply ignore it?"

Many liberals welcomed the gesture of the Pope as it seems to be a sign that Pope Francis wants to open up the Catholic Church. In his "electioneering" pre-Conclave speech the Pope had relentlessly analyzed the state of the Catholic Church . One observer evaluated the speech as a reckoning with his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

A conservative commentator from the UK, Chris Gillibrand wrote, according to the British "The Times": "One can be concerned that he might be willing to ordain women to the priesthood." Exactly what Francis has always rejected so far.

​​Federico Lombardi, spokesman for the Vatican , now clarifies in soothing tones that the Pope did not want to break canon law. It was merely an exception.

"It was a special situation in which an exclusion of the girls would have been inopportune given the simple goal of sending a message of love to a group that certainly did not include any designated expert in liturgical rules," Lombardi wrote by e-mail to The Associated Press

Bishop washes feet of nine women and three men in clear defiance of canon law

With a Mass on Holy Thursday, the Church began the celebration of the Triduum the of suffering, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. According to the Gospels, Jesus on the night before his death shared a meal with the 12 Apostles and washed their feet during this meal. With this service, which only slaves would have done at the time, he pointed out to his disciples his own life and their future role as a loving service for the people and for each other. "having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.", writes John (13.1).

Love is the legacy of Jesus, which he entrusted to his disciples. With the foot washing, Jesus gave an example, "that ye should do as I have done to you" (13:15). Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer washed the feet of 12 women and men from the diocese representing the 12 apostles during the Holy Thursday liturgy in the Great Cathedral of Regensburg.

In his homily, the bishop asked: Why should the washing of feet be a momentous occasion? Should a basin and a series of men's dirty feet - represented today by selected men and women (...), be really today the focus of our attention?

Foot washing is so important, because God chooses this image of affection to the people to show how He relates to each of us. Look how God presents Himself to you: This is the message of the washing of feet. There is a God who kneels, who is literally inclined towards you, who makes himself small to do you some good.

Bishop Rudolf: "His Church has thus displayed a legacy that is certainly not less obligatory, as (...) his Eucharistic legacy to us." Eucharist and foot washing show us both in the same and complementary way how God is. He is there for us. He, whom we want to follow.

As Christians we need to bend over and go down, we, who would prefer to rise quite high . We who are afraid to do something that damages us by taking us down from our high horse.

On the other hand, washing of feet occurs in many places in our everyday lives: where sickness and disease are accepted
and shared, where a disabled child is welcomed with fullness of love and with open arms, and recognized as a gift.

Foot washing is done, "where confront the need of others for help with their heart." Where people dare to "follow the viewpoint of Jesus: namely, not from the top down but from the bottom up."
Pope Francis washes around the same time as the Mass of the Lord's Supper in Regensburg the feet of young inmates in a Roman prison . A young man is reported to have said the day before: I finally learn even to know someone who says of himself that he was my father. Bishop Rudolf: "Pray for us. But let us also pray especially in these days in a special way for our Pope Francis, and that his testimony and that of all of us should be credible and always more credible. "


Cathcon- Would be glad to learn of any other Bishops, apart from the Pope, who include women among the Twelve.

The Bishop here clearly means this as a sign of progressive intent on the matter of female ordination. Or is he just raising false expectations?

Father Lombardi in a statement that the Pope's washing of the feet of female prisoners said that it was a particular situation.   It will clearly be extensively copied in years to come, whatever canon law says.

This was the former Diocese of the head of the CDF, Archbishop Müller. How can he do his job even if canon law is no longer properly applied?

Pope telephones Pope

Pope Francis on Holy Thursday telephoned his predecessor, Benedict XVI and had a "long and intense conversation" with him. The Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told journalists on Friday. The discussion following the Chrism Mass, at which all priests repeat their ordination promises, have shown the community between the two, the spokesman said.

The Pope elected on March 13 already has telephoned his predecessor twice and last Saturday he paid a visit to the current residence in Castel Gandolfo. There was a detailed two-hour exchange of views.

St Judas, Patron Saint of Modernists

They even set up a shrine to him in Austria, as reported by Cathcon in the story from March 2005, reproduced below. _________ Shrine to Judas in the town of Linz, Austria From the town that brought to the world Adolf Hitler now comes in the Ursuline Church an art installation for Lent, "Requiem for a friend Judas Iskarioth" ( Iscariot ).

The text accompanying the exhibition says that Judas should be made a saint and that he did not commit suicide but was done away with by the other apostles. It claims that the installation shows Judas with a halo. He is the intercessor for all suicides, for all those excluded, excommunicated, mocked, for all witches and apostates!

And, unbelievably, they light candles for Judas.

In contrast, the Gospel teaches:
"Those whom thou gavest me have I kept: and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition: that the scripture may be fulfilled." --Jesus Christ (John 17:12)

" Jesus replied to them, Did I not choose the twelve of you, and behold one of you is a devil" (John 6:70)

The artist of this abomination one Walter Gschwandtner.

The installation is located in the crypt where the Usuline Sisters are buried. In fact, it is the place where their bodies were laid before burial. The exhibition opened in Lent with a Mass (see pictures below). The exhibition is open every Sunday before Mass during Lent, and then will have a special showing on Good Friday, prior to a "Spiritual Concert". This Church no longer has the traditional ceremonies of Good Friday, but are celebrating Judas.

And nothing new under the sun. The Gnostic sect of the Cananites venerated Judas.

I hope any Catholic reading this would wish to protest. Here are the details of the Bishop of the Diocese, with the e-mail at the bottom of the page. Write in any language you choose, he certainly understands English. Please do not be abusive but firm in demanding clarification as to why such an outrage can take place.

The outrage apparently took place under the auspices of the Forum St. Severin for Christian Spirituality, Formation and Art, the Catholic Academic Association of the Diocese of Linz.

This was also exhibited at an earlier exhibition "Mary Annunciate and/or the Soup of the First Betrothal". The artist claims that it represents a lily!. There is nothing pure about this exhibition, either in content or intent.

This is meant to be the bowl in which Pilate washed his hands, also created by the artist. What is truth? The Church has only an 8 pm Mass on Sunday which attracts all the semi-lapsed Catholics of Linz, often intellectuals. It is not surprising that such intellectuals, who have often betrayed the Catholic faith, either in a small or a large way, should be confortable with such an exhibition dedicated to the ultimate betrayal in world history. Pray for them and all the Diocese of Linz.

The Ursuline Sisters left in 1968; their convent now contains a restaurant and the HQ of the Upper Austrian Press Association.

Requiem dla przyjaciela: Judasza Iskarioty A Polish forum has published the pictures with a commentary in Polish. A visitor to this site suggests that Judas would make a candidate for the "ecumenical caldendar of saints". One would have assumed that even given the debased standards for sanctity set by ecumenical calendars, Judas would be beneath them, but no! A German Lutheran site, the Church Year- Kirchenjahr already has the Wednesday of holy week as his feast day, with liturgical colours and readings. The site is independent but I think well used by Lutheran parishes in Germany.

A previous post highlighted the handing out of bananas by Linz Diocese. Now they resort to Judas to attract people into Church.

Cardinal jokes Pope is prisoner in a museum


Cathcon- Given that the Pope is the Vicar of Christ and he lives in the Vatican, from where he rules the Church, and presides over Mass, not least, in St Peter's Basilica, it is a joke in the poorest of all possible spiritual taste.
It refers back to the time when Pope Pius IX was really a prisoner in the Vatican, which makes the taste of the joke even worse.

Cathcon- Gaia is the Earth Goddess whom modern environmentalists invoke as providing an explanation for the ongoing processes in the biosphere.  This should have no place in Catholic thought and even less worship

Pope begins Easter with liturgical abuse


Cathcon- It is a salutary thing to visit the captives, as the Bible states, but the washing of the feet of the twelve who represent the Twelve Apostles is confined to adult Christian men. One of the two girls whose feet he washed was Muslim. Given the way the action will be viewed in the Middle East, it is hardly prudent.

Post scriptum!

We will see whether it is a particular case as Lombardi suggests or the beginning of a journey. Given his active support for the charismatic movement in his Diocese, one can only be concerned that he could be prepared to ordain women, under a movement of the spirit. For much of the last fifty years, we had the Spirit of Vatican II used to justify all sorts of unacceptable practices, which were never the working of the Holy Spirit.
How can the Pope maintain discipline in the Church if he himself does not conform himself to prevailing ecclesiastical legislation? He has the power to change legislation but it would be advisable to do that first.

The younger sister of Pope reveals the most intimate family side of His Holiness and tells how his life has changed since he was elected successor to Benedict XVI

"I have no plans at the moment to visit Rome. But I'm going to make the journey, " she said.

Maria Elena Bergoglio (64), the sister of Pope Francisco has lived in a house of exposed brick and with a tile roof in Ituzaingó. For nearly thirty years, "Mariela" - as she is called by her friends and neighbors has lived in the west of Buenos Aires. Housewife and separated from her husband, until a few days, spent her life in tranquility along with her two sons, George (37), architect and Joseph (28), store clerk. However, from Wednesday 13, when the French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran announced to the world the nomination of the new Pope, Mrs Bergoglio's routine changed in an instant. "It was a matter of seconds. Barely had my brother been named and the phone started ringing. And that was throughout the day. I could not sleep much. Today I wanted to take a nap and rest a while, but then the doorbell rang. The first thing I thought was that things were not going to be the same. And I think I was right. It has really changed my life, says " Mariela ", 24 hours after the election of the first Latin American pope.

How do you live now?

'It's a very big stir, but I know that in the course of the day, little by little, I'm going to assimilate the fact that suddenly I have a brother who is Pope. I need to connect with my feelings, with this revolution of emotions that fills me with happiness but which still will not let me sleep.

"It will be hard for my brother being so far from home. He loves Buenos Aires. Sometimes I think that the role of the Pope is very lonely"

What is your brother Jorge Bergoglio like?

Between the two, there is very much a difference in age of twelve years. And although we never played together, he was always a very close brother, very present in spite of the distances and his commitments to the Church. We talk once a week, we wrote letters and we organized to share the odd family lunch at a time when he cooked. Because he loves to make stuffed squid or mushroom risotto, which he learned from a recipe inherited from our Italian grandmother.

What is it that you admire about him?

His big heart and clarity with which he conveys his ideas ideas. That is a quality that I always admired in Jorge: the simplicity with which he shares his thoughts. My brother is a very thoughtful person that inevitably forces you to think.

How do you see his role as Pope?

Knowing him, I feel he will get to produce changes in the Church. Not only because he is a man of integrity, strong character and admirable convictions, but he will have the support of us all through prayer. As long as I remember, I have listened to Jorge asking us to pray for him. So he made his way.

Some time ago you said that he wanted to be the successor of Benedict XVI. Why?

Because I feel, maybe I'm wrong, that the role of the Pope is a very demanding task in which everyday decisions are made in solitude. It will be hard for him being away from Buenos Aires. It will be difficult for everyone. Today I thought, despite the distance, we two follow the same path but from afar.

You have not yet had the chance to talk to your brother. If you could talk to him now, what is the first thing you say?

Nothing. I think I would give him a strong hug and cry with him. In these matters, Jorge is as sensitive as I am.


Pope criticises modern Pelaganism in his Holy Thursday Homily

We need to “go out”, then, in order to experience our own anointing, its power and its redemptive efficacy: to the “outskirts” where there is suffering, bloodshed, blindness that longs for sight, and prisoners in thrall to many evil masters. It is not in soul-searching or constant introspection that we encounter the Lord: self-help courses can be useful in life, but to live by going from one course to another, from one method to another, leads us to become pelagians and to minimize the power of grace, which comes alive and flourishes to the extent that we, in faith, go out and give ourselves and the Gospel to others, giving what little ointment we have to those who have nothing, nothing at all.

Perhaps the Pope does not realises that Pope Benedict criticised Vatican II for being in part Pelagian.

The pastoral constitution Gaudium et Spes in final form was primarily the work of French theologians. The German group did not control the text. At the time of the council Ratzinger already noted many difficulties, beginning with the problem of language. In opting for the language of modernity the text inevitably places itself outside the world of the Bible, so that as a result the biblical citations come to be little more than ornamental. Because of its stated preference for dialogue, the constitution makes faith appear not as an urgent demand for total commitment but as a conversational search into obscure matters. Christ is mentioned only at the end of each section, almost as an afterthought.

Instead of replacing dogmatic utterances with dialogue, Ratzinger contends, it would have been better to use the language of proclamation, appealing to the intrinsic authority of God's truth. The constitution, drawing on the thought of Teilhard de Chardin, links Christian hope too closely to the modern idea of progress. Material progress is ambivalent because it can lead to degradation as well as to true humanization. The Cross teaches us that the world is not redeemed by technological advances but by sacrificial love. In the section on unification, Gaudium et Spes approaches the world too much from the viewpoint of function and utility rather than that of contemplation and wonder.

Ratzinger's commentary on the first chapter of Gaudium et Spes contains still other provocative comments. The treatment of conscience in article 16, in his view, raises many unsolved questions about how conscience can err and about the right to follow an erroneous conscience. The treatment of free will in article 17 is in his judgment “downright Pelagian.” It leaves aside, he complains, the whole complex of problems that Luther handled under the term “servum arbitrium,” although Luther's position does not itself do justice to the New Testament.

Canon lawyer believes leading supporter of Pope in Conclave violated the oath of secrecy

While the conclave assistants’ oath of secrecy set out in UDG 48 binds both in conscience and under penalty of law (Canon 1399 per UDG 48, excommunication per UDG 58), a cardinal elector’s oath (UDG 53) gravely binds only in conscience, not under penalty of law; electors who violate the oath they took in public (nb: before Extra omnes is called, per UDG 52) are accountable to God for their deed.*

Enforcing conclave secrecy is very difficult, and there is always a tendency to up the penalties when enforcement of a law is problematic. But, considering the range of information that could be leaked, I think that excommunication, a one-size-fits-all sanction, is too severe. Interdict seems more reasonable, as does a just penalty under Canon 1399.

Catholic journalists should have no part in tempting an elector to break his oath. That would be to act as an occasion of sin in another. Repeating or reporting on information, however, alleged to have been leaked is not, in my opinion, a violation of law.

* (A) Cdl. Kasper, unprompted, stated “Cardinal Bergoglio was from the beginning my candidate and I have from the beginning of the Conclave voted for him.” This seems to me a direct violation of the terms of conclave secrecy. 

(B) Cdl. Mahony stated “when the first blank ballot was given to us, and when it was time to write down a name, something powerful—and strange—happened. I picked up my pen to write, and I began. However, my hand was being moved by some greater spiritual force. The name on the ballot just happened. I had not yet narrowed my thinking down to one name; but it was done for me.” This very odd comment does not, in my opinion, violate the terms of conclave secrecy, but it shows poor judgment

It is signed Antonio Gaspari, editorial coordinator of the agency Zenit. Note that the most important thing is not that it is boldly advanced, but what is carefully implied: there was a pope between John Paul II and Francis.

Belgicatho's orientation is that of a more traditional blog. So it is with surprise (and certain Belgian activists had to choke- including also CathCon - lived in Belgium for 10 years) that they were seen to be reproducing and boasting about an "excellent" interview with Cardinal Danneels, gravedigger of the Belgian Church, the carrier of the flame of the progressive Cardinal Martini. Belgicatho noticed that after the election of Francis: "Unquestionably, Cardinal Danneels is much happier in the aftermath of the election of Benedict XVI."

In his first Angelus, Francis mentioned the name of Cardinal Kasper, for no other reason than to show his proximity to the straying ecumenical theologian. Cardinal Kasper voted for him and openly violated his oath of confidentiality, "Cardinal Bergoglio was my early candidate and from the beginning of the conclave I voted for him. He represents a new beginning for the Church, a Church that is humble and fraternal, there for people and which returns to its source: the Gospel. "

Cathcon- after the Council, never were the Popes so holy and the Churches so empty.  It is the first time in history that a Pope has been canonised before election.....

Papal coat of arms corrected to remove Communistic and Freemasonic symbolism

The coat of arms of Pope Francis has been corrected. The controversial five-pointed star has been replaced by an eight-pointed star. The bishop and cardinal showed on a blue shield the seal of the Jesuit order and under it as silver nard blossom and a silver five-pointed star. The first version of the Papal coat of arms published by the Vatican showed beside the papal insignia initially just a correction: The nard blossom and star were not shown in silver, but in gold, probably in order to take account of a heraldic principle. The five-pointed star caused some discussion as well as irritation, as reported. (Cathcon- St. Joseph, the patron of the universal Church, in traditional Hispanic iconography is depicted holding a nard blossom).

The star on the coat of arms of the new Pope will represent Mary.  The Maria star is traditionally represented with eight points or rays. Over the past 250 years, the five-pointed star has been increasingly been taken over initially by Freemasons, then also as a symbol of communists and anarchists. The freemasonic and communistic five pointed star represents the self-sufficient man (legs, arms, head) who does not need a God.

A five-pointed star in a papal coat of arms gave rise in the Catholic Church, not least in the Vatican, to some irritation, over those who turn only a blind eye, who basically are indifferent to symbols or who have no opinion on their meaning. For the Catholic Church sysmbols are of the utmost importance. Finally, the Vatican saw the need to intervene to correct the coat of arms,  to dispel any doubts.

The Vatican published the meantime, a new corrected coat of arms of Pope Francis . A decision that could be made only with the approval of the new Pope. The papal coat of arms now has an eight-pointed star, and thus the classical shape of a star, which is symbolic of the Most Blessed and Most Pure Virgin Mary, Mother of God. In addition, the eight rays of the star represent the Beatitudes,  the Vatican announced. By correcting,  all speculations and interpretations about the Papal  coat of arms have been ended. Symbols have just a precise central essence and especially for the Catholic Church. The nard blossom, which  in the episcopal coat of arms  for European eyes looked more like a bunch of grapes, has now been clearly shown.

The coat of arms of Pope Francis has also for the first time  a heraldic motto, which  Jorge Mario Bergoglio has already used in his coats of arms, as Bishop and Cardinal.

Pope John Paul I, remains the exception among all popes. His coat of arms were changed multiple times.The episcopal crest showed three eight-pointed star, the crest as Patriarch and Cardinal showed three six-pointed stars but the Papal coat of arms had suddenly three five-pointed stars. SSPX replies to yesterday's renewed demand by CDF head for Vatican II acceptance

First canonisation by Pope Francis- 800 martyrs murdered by Muslim soldiers

The first relates to canonization Antonio Primaldo and 800 companions , who suffered martyrdom together in 1480  in the southern Italian city of Otranto at the hands of Muslim troops after they refused to deny Jesus and convert to Islam.

The second canonization is of Mother Laura Montoya Upegui from Colombia. Mother Laura (1874-1949) is the founder (1914) of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Mary Immaculate and St. Catherine of Siena. The Order has branches in many countries in Central and South America, the Caribbean, Italy and Angola. Mother Laura is now recognized as the first saint of Colombia after she was beatified in 2004 by Pope John Paul II.

Maria Guadalupe Garcia Zavala (1878-1963) is also raised to the altars on May 12. The Mexican nun is known as Mother Lupita. In 1901 she founded the Congregation of the Servants of Saint Margaret Mary and the Poor. (SSMMP). The Order has some 150 sisters and is active  in Mexico, Peru, Greece, Iceland and Italy in ministry to the poor. Mother Lupita was beatified in 2004 by Pope John Paul II.

Widow of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter has died aged 101

Whoever met Franziska Jägerstätter, "went away forever blessed " stressed the Diocesan Bishop Ludwig Schwarz of Linz on Friday evening in his homily at the Requiem for the wife of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter who has died at the age of 101. Bishop Schwarz celebrated in Linz's Mariendom, together with Nuncio Archbishop Peter Stephan Zurbriggen, Episcopal Vicar Maximilian Mittendorfer, Vicar Severin Lederhilger, Rector Ewald Volgger and former Abbot Berthold Heigl of Seitenstetten.

Schwarz recalled in his homily that Franziska Jägerstätter's life had for decades translated the message of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter to the present day. He praised Franziska Jägerstätter as devout woman "who set an example for all of us as followers of Christ" is. "She had a difficult life after the war, and kept always a happy heart. Whoever met her went away forever blessed," said the bishop.

Members of the Jägerstätter family and the parish of St. Radegund and faithful from all parts of the Diocese of Linz came to the Requiem. From the political world, Governor Josef Pühringer attended the church service. The sacristans of Upper Austria was well-represented with many members in the congregation, as Franziska Jägerstätter for 30 years held the office of sacristan in St. Radegund. Jägerstätter died on 16 March shortly after her 100th Birthday in St. Radegund. The funeral at which Cardinal Christoph Schönborn and the Innsbruck Bishop Manfred Scheuer are expected, takes place on Saturday afternoon in St. Radegund.

Cardinal Lehmann could not be happier with the election of the new Pope

His turbulent days are him behind: Cardinal Karl Lehmann, Bishop of Mainz. As one of six German representatives in the conclave he elected the new pope. Now he speaks to hr-iNFO "Conversation"- (Cathcon- when podcast available will extract any other key points)

First the resignation of the old pope, then the meeting at the Vatican for the election of the new head of the Catholic Church, including the surprising decision of Pope Francis, the first Pope from Latin America. Extraordinary business of Cardinal Bertone

An aura of mystery surrounds the controversial figure of Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the centre of a little-known story.

Some twenty years ago the Salesian order received a large inheritance which produced a legal dispute, resolved through the mediation of some lawyers and experts. Except that, after the event these mediators presented invoices for more even than the total inheritance, producing in evidence a signed contract.

In effect the judicial authorities put the Salesians in the wrong with the consequent real risk of seizure of all their goods and outright closure (Cathcon- presumably just in Italy). But how did the Salesians get into a mess like this?

Here would be the hand of Tarcisio Bertone, SDB happened at the time to be Archbishop of Genoa, as he was the one who signed the suicidal agreement.

Bertone was forced to write a very embarrassed letter to the magistrate , claiming they have been duped by people who had abused his naivety.

A Salesian naive? But the business sense of the Salesians is proverbial and it is difficult to imagine the Vatican Secretary of State as poor and cowardly.

What is most disturbing is the coincidence in time between the '"agreement" that would lead to the seizing of the Salesian assets and the approaching end of the pontificate of John Paul II and the entry of Bertone into the circles that matter.

Pope Francis suggested married priests could be possible

“In those Churches, the priests can be married, but the bishops have to be celibate. They are very good priests. Sometimes I joke with them and tell them that they have wives at home, but they did not realize they also got a mother-in-law as part of the bargain.”

The pontiff-to-be noted that in Western Catholicism, some organizations are pushing for more discussion about the issue of celibacy.

“For now, the discipline of celibacy stands firm. Some say, with a certain pragmatism, that we are losing manpower. If, hypothetically, Western Catholicism were to review the issue of celibacy, I think it would do so for cultural reasons (as in the East), not so much as a universal option.”

He said he remained in favor of maintaining celibacy “for the moment,” adding, “It is a matter of discipline, not of faith. It can change. Personally, it never crossed my mind to marry. But there are cases.”

Witness says that Pope wanted compromise on homosexual unions

But others who observed the bishops’ private annual assembly in 2010 said that the cardinal was earnestly hoping for compromise on the issue.

“Bergoglio’s thinking was very clearly demonstrated both with what he said and in the message of his pastoral work,” said Roxana Alfieri, a social worker in the communications department of the bishops’ central office here.

“He didn’t want the church to take a position of condemning people but rather of respect for their rights like any vulnerable person,” said Ms. Alfieri, who sat in on the bishops’ 2010 meeting.

Pope Francis brings liberation theology with him to Rome

With Pope Francis, the "poetic prose of the liberation theologians with more than 30 years delay has arrived in Rome through the main entrance ". This was written by the editor of the German Catholic news agency KNA, Ludwig Ring-Eifel, on Thursday on the website of the Cologne Diocesan transmitter "domradio". He refers to the amazing parallels between the views of the Pope and Leonardo Boff.

Francis had changed within a week the externals and also the working environment. "Hugs, warmth and laughter have come to St Peter's Square and the Papal Basilica. And the new Bishop of Rome races through the awe inspiring halls and corridors of the Vatican in  his threadbare black street shoes with dynamic steps making things seem suddenly very different," said Ring-Eifel .

In his first major sermon at the inauguration Mass on Tuesday, the new Pope had shown that he would not only change style and appearance, but also the content, writes the journalist. The Pope spoke "not formulaic ecclesiastical prose like some cardinals and which observers contemptuously call 'Vatispeak'". But even "dogmatic formulas and lecture-like essays on the theology of the Fathers" were not subjects for Francis (Cathcon-!!).

"Instead," - according to Ring-Eifel - "He speaks quite specifically, without falling into the merely political." The statements could be readily fit into two Twitter messages, they are "easy to understand, but not empty slogans."

There was also something else new to the content. Francis say things like: "The feeling of mind, the pastoral care requiring goodness, demanding living with tenderness," and he went further that tenderness is "not about the virtue of the weak" , but the ability "to he really open to others, to love. "

"Such phrases have been heard on the matter before," says KNA's chief editor: "They are concepts and images of liberation theology in Latin America."

Ring-Eifel pointed to a book by "the liberation theologian Leonardo Boff who was first sponsored by Joseph Ratzinger and later reprimanded". The title of the book by Boff reads "Tenderness and Strength - Francis of Assisi, seen through the eyes of the poor".

"The poetic prose of the liberation theologians with more than 30 years delay has arrived in Rome through the main entrance.   Of course, it is not the violent and totalitarian version of this theology, as applied in Cuba, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Colombia, where many people lost their lives . It is the quiet, humane version which is first about the inner transformation of the individual, analyzed Ring-Eifel.

He remembers that as in the early days of the Franciscan movement so there were in the liberation theology of the 20th century, there were two wings  - the soft-version and the hardline. The former has now "placed an Argentine Jesuit to Rome on the Chair of Peter."


Cathcon- if this interpretation is correct, the Head of the CDF will feel safer in his job, but Cardinal Cipriani will be less than delighted.

Pope St Gregory the Great entertained the poor

Saint Gregory admonished his rectors that the papal patrimonies were the goods of the poor, that the thing most to be sought after was not gold, but eternal justice, and that the treasure of the Church was not to be used for selfish ends. By his boundless charities and the extraordinary burden put upon them, he finally emptied his treasury. But this he thought was only as it should be. Every day, he fed at his own table twelve poor pilgrims, whom he insisted on serving himself. We are told that one day when he entered the dining room he saw not twelve men, but thirteen. He inquired of his steward why there was an extra guest, but the astonished steward maintained that they had only the usual number.

“I am sure I see thirteen!” the Pope insisted.

As the meal progressed, Saint Gregory noticed that the countenance of one of his guests kept changing from time to time. Now he would find himself looking into the face of a handsome young man, and again his gaze would fix itself on the same face become suddenly old and venerable. When he could stand the mystery no longer, Pope Gregory drew the strange man aside.

“What is your name?” he asked him.

“Do you not remember,” his guest replied, “the merchant who came to you one day at Saint Andrew’s Monastery and told you that he had lost all his possessions in a shipwreck, and whom you gave twelve pieces of money and the silver dish which was your treasured remembrance of your beloved mother? I am the merchant to whom you gave your mother’s dish. Rather, I am the angel whom God sent to you to prove your charity. Now, do not fear,” he added, seeing Saint Gregory’s trembling amazement, “it is for the alms of that silver dish that God has given you the Chair of Saint Peter. And behold, God has sent me to be your guardian as long as you remain in this world. Whatever you ask will be granted you through me.”

Cathcon- attempts by the modern media to say the Pope is renewing the Papacy through poverty are rather unconvincing.

Since Pope Gregory, the proper titles of the Pope are Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province.
Every Pope is obliged to keep a balance between all of these roles in whatever age they live.

Jesuit defence of Pope Francis

You are young, inexperienced, and burdened with a heavy responsibility at a dangerous time. Today we understand better what was happening, but then it was often utterly confusing. You march for the truth and non-violence but such a stance seems almost irrelevant as the struggle deteriorates into a welter of killing and ‘political cleansing’. You struggle to keep your feet.

A major preoccupation is to prevent casualties among your Jesuit companions. You call this prudence but you wonder whether the situation demands something more forthright. You are acutely aware that, as a priest, you are in less danger than the ordinary people but that your public stance can place them in mortal danger. There are disagreements among your advisors and you do not have the hindsight with which to make perfect decisions, and so you make some mistakes. But you acknowledge these and hope that people will understand.

Some will; some won’t. There are some for whom even if Francis was the very incarnation of Francis of Assisi, that would still not be good enough. Hopefully most people will be grateful that he’s human and fallible. St Paul reminds us that the gospel is carried by us, mere ‘earthen vessels’. For Christian believers the election of Pope Francis is a vivid sign of the times, and what God seems to me to be saying through it is: ‘It’s the Gospel, stupid!’


Pope reminds Jesuits of their duty of unconditional obedience to the Pope.

Dear Father Nicolás,

I received with great joy the kind letter you sent me, in your name and that of the Society of Jesus, on the occasion of my election to the See of Peter, in which you assure me of your prayers for me and my apostolic ministry as well as your full disposition to continue serving - unconditionally - the Church and the Vicar of Christ according to the teachings of St. Ignatius Loyola.

My heartfelt thanks for this sign of affection and closeness, which I am happy to reciprocate, asking the Lord to illuminate and accompany all Jesuits, so that faithful to the charism received and following in the footsteps of the saints of our beloved Order, they may be evangelical leaven in the world in their pastoral action, but above all in the witness of a life totally dedicated to the service of the Church, the Spouse of Christ, seeking unceasingly the glory of God and the good of souls.

With these sentiments, I ask all Jesuits to pray for me and to entrust me to the loving protection of the Virgin Mary, our Mother in heaven, while as a sign of God's abundant graces, I give you the Apostolic Blessing with special affection, which I also extend to all those who cooperate with the Society of Jesus in her activities, those who benefit from her good deeds and participate in her spirituality.

Cathcon- an indirect but decisive reference to the fourth Jesuit oath, after poverty, chastity and obedience and which was inserted into the Bull Exposcit Debitum.

"to carry out whatever the present and future Roman pontiffs may order which pertains to the progress of souls and the propagation of the faith and to go without subterfuge or excuse, as far as in us lies, to whatsoever provinces they may choose to send us, whether they are pleased to send us among the Turks or any other infidels even to those who live in the region called the Indies, or among any heretics whatever, or schismatics or any of the Faithful."

The Pope's career indicates that he took this rather more seriously than many of his Jesuits contemporaries but he now definitely expects it of them.
