The Abbey became a barracks after the French Revolution and now is an exhibition centre. The Church is still in use for Masses.
The Church in Europe has over the last five centuries suffered from a series of desecrations all of which have closed and/ or stolen Churches.
Firstly, the Protestant Reformation
Secondly, Josephinism
Thirdly, French Revolution and later Napoleon
Fourthly, the 1901 Law of Associations in France which led to the expulsion of many orders and the closures of monasteries.
Fifthly, Nazism
For instance, Hitler wanted to dynamite this magnificent Pilgrimage Church of Our Lady of Sorrows on Postlingburg in his home town and replace it with a temple dedicated to pagan "gods"
Sixthly, Communism
Seventhly, the enormous secularisation after the Second Vatican Council

While there are Catholic Churches in Armenia, the Armenian Church is not in communion with Rome.
There is a systematic attempt to surpress the truth about the Armenian Genocide in the hope that Turkey can be admitted to the European Union.

His Feast is celebrated today. Chrysostom means "golden tongue", a name given to him because of his preaching abilities. His Homilies on Matthew can be used as an antidote to any boring sermon which has failed to preach, let alone communicate the Catholic Faith.

Carnival Cardinal Lehmann and the devil

The Diocese of Aachen is almost bankrupt. Their Bishop is trying to evict three remaining nuns from the Aachen Carmel, so he can sell their convent for ready money. But on the evening of the 22 January the Bishop decided it was more important to go to the Aachen Carnival. There he could see a mock up of his ancient Cathedral being given over to the devil and his troupe of dancer and Cardinal Lehmann being made a "Knight against Deadly Seriousness". Here is the Cardinal and the devil. The devil is no laughing matter, the state of the Church is deadly serious. But now we know what are the priorities of the Bishop of Aachen and the Cardinal Archbishop of Mainz

Augustinian nuns were still living here until the 1980s. The initial plan was to level the whole site for a car park. The museum is fascinating but leaves one with a broken heart for what has been and what might have been.
The title of the Hospital is derived from that of "Rosa Mystica" given to Our Lady in the Litany of Loreto.
The Chapel is next to a long ward, so that it was possible to hear Mass from your sick bed. What a sad contrast with the modern day, when the last years tend to be spent in the company of the television set.

Far worse devastation than even the Reformation- Catholic Church in Nijmegen

Cathcon thanks a good Catholic from the Netherlands for the text of this post. May God in his mercy deliver us!
Between 1973 and 2002, according to the Building Offices of the Dutch dioceses, 240 Catholic churches were closed down. Some of them were demolished, others sold to project developers, shopkeepers, building societies, businessmen and so on.
The Catholic Church at the Rozengracht in Amsterdam has been converted into a mosque. A Catholic Church in Den Bosch became a restaurant and party centre. Many Churches were converted into appartment buildings.
The Parish Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Dominicus in Haarlem (also known as Spaarnekerk) was demolished, its spire was bought by the owner of a fish and chips shop to use it as the roof of his shop. (To be seen in the part of town called Schalkwijk and if you just can't believe that a Church official would do this –see the picture here). Its beautiful wood carved pulpit went to a antique and curiosity shop; there the pulpit was broken up and sold per panel. The Way of the Cross, beautifully painted on copper plates was sold to an old iron salesman, who melted it down for the copper.
Nijmegen, town without churches and monasteries.
The Church on the Krayenhofflaan in Nijmegen has been converted into a furniture showroom, the devotionalia of this church were sold at a junk market and much went for rubbish collection. (no picture found)
The High Altar, the pews and the statues of saints disappeared from the Church of St. Joseph in Nijmegen. This has now become the Titus Brandsma Memorial Church and pictures can be seen of the Church on this website. A great Carmelite saint but no excuse.
In the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes (and scroll down) the tabernacle is no longer the centre of the Church, but was literally 'put aside'.
In his book Monasteries in North Brabant in Peril (2003) J.W. Heijsteeg tells us that well over 200 monasteries from the 274 of North Brabant are closed and abandoned today. Almost all seminaries were closed and demolished. This book is in Dutch.
The Monastery of the Congregation of Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Sacrament in Nijmegen was abandoned last year. The monastery is a hospice now. The Chapel and Altar, beautifully decorated by the well known artist, Jan Toorop was part of this building. The new owner said he thought the Chapel still "too catholic". The great library and the collection of relics and devotionalia was sold to a second hand shop. Correspondence, photos, utensils, books, missals: it all was thrown in trash containers and transported off to a garbage dump.
The former Monastery of Piushove, owned by the Congregation of the Little Sisters of St. Joseph of Heerlen was bought in September 2002 by the building society, Talis and the home care institution Habicura. The monastery will be made fit for 32 Alzheimer patients.
The Monastery of Marienbosch (built 1925) at the Groesbeekseweg in Nijmegen was closed last year, inclusive the chapel, complete with interior, pews, statues and so on. This monastery offers room for some 200 Polish workers at present. A property developer stands ready to transform this building into luxury appartments.
The impressive and huge complex of the Nebo Redemptorist Monastery was also sold to a building society a few weeks ago. Some old fathers still live in the South Wing. The North Wing is in use at present by the Hogeschool (Academy) Arnhem-Nijmegen. In 2007, the alterations will begin to rebuild the property into about 90 luxury appartments. The church will remain, although considerable smaller than it is now.
The monastery of St. Vincentius at the Dominicanenstraat has been owned since 1998 by the International Centre of Women and the Buddhist Jewel Heart. There are plans to demolish this huge monastery complex.
The Mansion Maria-Louise at the Eversweg 4 in Nijmegen (a classified monument) was the monastery of the Sisters and Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Late in 2003, this was offered for sale, inclusive garage and tea dome (!) and Chapel. Fate presently unknown.
The living quarters of the Jesuit Canisius College (scroll down, a small photo also here) of the Berg en Dalseweg, Nijmegen is for sale via a real estate broker. He asks 825,000 euro for the house.
The Assumptionist Monastery at the Louisaweg (Het Heidehuis - The Heather House) is abandoned by the fathers. The library of 40,000 books went for one part to the Instute of Eastern Christianity and for another part to the junk market in Gemert where the books were sold for a price per kilo (like potatoes). The location itself is now a youth reform institution which seems to have connections with the Marists.
The Monastery of Brakkestein, and also here inclusive of the Parish Church, of the Fathers of the Congregation of the Most Holy Sacrament will be demolished and replaced by a number of smaller buildings. Their library ended up on a junk market
Part of the library of the Passionists Monastery of Mater Dolorossa in Mook (about 20 banana boxes full) was sold to a second hand book shop. Most of the library was transported to the garbage dump. It was in this Monastery that the Passionist martyr bishop, Blessed Eugene Bossilikov studied.
Many more pictures of Nijmegen Churches can be found here. Another excellent site is here. If you go through the individual pictures "afgebroken" means demolished.
And this is just one town in the Netherlands. In parish after parish, monastery after monastery and town after town, the same was repeated over and over again.
Churches demolished and no more Catholic education
The vicious circle at its most vicious
In September 2004, the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen skipped the name 'Catholic' and changed the name into Radboud University. There was no resistance from the part of the clergy (Cardinal Simonis of Utrecht is Chancellor of this university, however. Not even a Cardinal can now be relied on to defend the catholicity of a university).
Some two or three years ago the same happened to the Katholieke Universiteit Brabant at Tilburg. They altered their name into Tilburg University, also without any resistance from the part of the diocesan clergy.
Anyone who tries to tell you how wonderful the years after the Second Vatican Council have been for the Church, get them to read this article. The Council was meant to be a pastoral rather than a dogmatic Council. Something has gone horribly wrong.

My house shall be called a house of prayer... but you have turned it into yet another "cultural centre". Europe now has an over-supply of cultural centres and not enough culture to go around, not least because of the steady abstraction of Catholic life, art and devotions in the years since the Council. Former Franciscan Monastery of Old St George, Cincinnati is now a "Great Good Place for Community and Spiritual Renewal."
"Old St. George is a community center, conference center and spiritual center hosting a wide variety of group and individual events."
The new owners claim to practice "post-denominational ministry" or better put "the religion of the self-satisfied".
The Church is now available for "Monastery Weddings" and as can be seen from the photograph of the former sanctuary, this community centre manages to bring not only the Sacrament of Marriage into disrepute but also the Last Supper and the Mass.
Why did the Church allow this to happen? Who allowed it to happen?

Nothing gives such pleasure to God as the conversion and salvation of men, for whom his every word and every revelation exist. He wants you to become a living force for all mankind, lights shining in the world. You are to be radiant lights as you stand beside Christ, the great light, bathed in the glory of him who is the light of heaven. You are to enjoy more and more the pure and dazzling light of the Trinity, as now you have received - though not in its fullness - a ray of its splendour, proceeding from the one God, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be glory and power for ever and ever. The Great Catholic Sale began in the late 1960s after the Vatican Council. A photograph taken in an antiques shop at the time. A church in the Netherlands was converted into an antique showroom. The business was so successful that the church is now only used for the valuable statues. Their new display place is room after room of religious objects taken from desecrated and "modernised" churches.

When this sort of desecration occurs, the faithful of the area should get the Diocese to name exactly who authorised this sale and when. Name, shame and send them to the Missions!

This is a picture of the blasphemously named Sanctuary Club. Please be warned about the offensive nature of the material on their website. There website even proclaims, "Yeah, its a church".

Almost 10 million dollars and the Archbishop can give no guarantees that the Church remains open. If St John Neumann had had the chance to meet some of the modern bishops, would he have been so keen to transfer the parochial control to them?

Bitter end for parishes in Boston

Boston Archdiocese abuses the Feast and the name of the Holy Family to create new parish.
Hiding their misdeeds behind the Holy Family! And one of the great gifts to the Church of the Franciscan Order of which Archbishop O'Malley is a member was the Christmas crib.
Christmas over and the Archdiocese of Boston continues as if nothing had happened.

Please pray for the Sisters of the Holy Family on the Feast.
"The sister said preparing for the closure of the school means removing all signs and symbols of St. Andrew's and of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth.
'Each classroom has a picture of the Holy family, which is something we've tried to instill in the kids, the importance of family,' she said. 'We've had a picture of our mother foundress in every classroom, too, and those have to go now as well. I had a mother say to me just the other day, 'I'm so glad that my children had the opportunity to see sisters in action,' and that's extremely rewarding.'
Stripping the building of references to its history also begs the question of how the school's Polish heritage will be preserved for future generations. Sister Virginia -- who is also of Polish descent -- said those lessons will now have to come through the church and parents."

No trust for the Archbishop at St Stanislaus Kostka. "the proposal for the trust quickly fell apart when board members realized that only Burke and his chosen representatives would dictate the terms of the trust".
Not so long ago, the Archbishop was being called the new St John Fisher because of his attitude to the whitewash of Senator Kerry by the Bishop's Conference. One thing for sure now, he is no St John Fisher.

A priest full of Christian charity, unlike the Archbishop, visits to celebrate Christmas Mass. God forbid that the Archbishop ever controls the financial assets of the Church because he will then close the Church.

The cost of the collegiality of the Belgian bishops. The new inter-diocesan centre being built in the centre of Brussels. Ironically, the Second Vatican Council divided the Belgian Church in two- a French Church and a Flemish Church, no longer united by Latin. The Church competes with the Dutch Church for lack of numbers and piety.

PCI :Public Communications Inc. should be congratulated.
They work for the Church and the laity for free unlike the PR agency representing the Archdiocese of Boston.
And so typical of the modern Jesuit order. Modelled on an army by St Ignatius, they have lost the will to fight in Europe and America.
"Three years later, the Jesuits announced plans to demolish the cathedral-size building and replace it with a small utilitarian worship center to serve the remaining 300 African-American and Hispanic parishioners"
See also the magnificent history in the pdf link.
"He prayed all night in front of Our Lady of Perpetual Help" (Father Damen's reaction when the Church was earlier threatened by the Great Chicago Fire) (incidentally Our Lady under this title is the Patron also of this blogspot).
"We are going to save the past to preserve the future."

A former Catholic Church which was hidden from protestant persecutors is now a Lutheran Church. What a bitter fate! And the Church of the Holy Martyrs of Gorcum was turned into appartments years ago.
The Catholic Church in the Netherlands is a pale shadow of its former self. A failure of each and every modern Bishop in the Netherlands. This is what collegiality with its ersatz national forms of Catholicism brings!

is the Feast today. It says an enormous amount about the modern Church that the Feast was removed from the 1969 Missal only to be restored in 2002 as an "optional memoria".
The Epistle reading in the 1962 Missal is Acts 4: 8-12 which ends with:
"Salvation is not to be found elsewhere; this alone of all the names under heaven has been appointed to men as the one by which we must needs be saved".
This has been removed in the modern Missal. Instead, two options are given - either Galatians 4:4-7 or Philippians 2:5-11 . The key part of the second reading is the introit in the 1962 Missal.
Phil 2:10 "so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth"

Carmel of Maria Koenigin (Our Lady, Queen) in Aachen, Germany

Article in German. Bishop Mussinghof of Aachen is trying to close the Carmel, which has now only three sisters, thanks to the ban that he himself imposed on recruitment.
Sorry that the article is in German. But I quote a key passage:
"We will fight for our existence. And with all means the available " states a sister. She assumes that the Diocese have specific material interests in the closure of the monastery. "the diocese is speculating on the fact that our monastery reverts into its possession after closure and it can sell the real estate and property."
This sounds a very familiar story. The Bishop is displaying a complete lack of charity towards an order which normally have been the last order left standing in European towns in the years after the Second Vatican Council.
The Bishop also has some odd theological views.
From his sermon at the International Meeting of Prayer for World Peace in Aachen
"When we are praying for peace, we are turning to the one God. We know: God is not Catholic, God is not protestant, God is not Orthodox, God is not even Christian. God is not jewish. God is not muslim, God is not buddhist. God is not the God of one or the other religion. God is the God and Father of every person. He desires all men to be saved. God cares for every person. God loves everyone. God is God for all of us. He is our good father. We are all his creatures, children of this earth."
This may have made the congregation feel good but it is not actually what the Catholic Church teaches.
May Our Lady of Carmel, Protectoress against Error and enduring Strength of Carmel pray for us and the little Carmel of Aachen.

Blessings vote causes rift with Catholics. Catholics have a choice between mission which saves souls and dialogue which compromises truth. Forgetfulness of Our Lord's commission to preach the Good News has led to the closure of Churches. If you think that the Church is no longer Our Mother and the Ark of Salvation but a bureaucratic machinery, this result is inevitable. God's houses become mere stones.

Sister Daues (director of "Mission Effectiveness") is not sure what the final solutions will be, but she expects some decisions in late January or early February.
