All Soul's Day

This day is for remembering and praying for the souls of the those detained in Purgatory. At Masses today (there will be three), the glorious Sequence "Dies Irae" (also used in Requiem Masses, i.e., Masses for the Dead) will be recited after the Epistle, Gradual, and Tract ("Dies Irae" means "Day of Wrath").

Between Noon of November 1 and Midnight tonight, a person who has been to confession and Communion can gain a plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions, for the poor souls each time he visits a church or public oratory and recites the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory be to the Father six times. This is a special exception to the ordinary law of the Church according to which a plenary indulgence for the same work can be gained only once a day.

Also, the faithful who, during the period of eight days from All Souls Day, visit a cemetery and pray for the dead may gain a plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions, on each day of the Octave, applicable only to the dead.

Psalmus 129. De profúndis
De profúndis clamávi ad te, Dómine: * Dómine, exáudi vocem meam :
2 Fiant aures tuæ intendéntes: * in vocem deprecatiónis meæ.
3 Si iniquitátes observáveris, Dómine: * Dómine, quis sustinebit?
4 Quia apud te propitiátio est: * et propter legem tuam sustínui te, Dómine.
5 Sustinuit ánima mea in verbo ejus: * sperávit ánima mea in Dómino.
6 A custódia matutína usque ad noctem: * speret Israël in Dómino.

OUT of the deep have I called unto thee, O LORD; * Lord, hear my voice.
2 O let thine ears consider well * the voice of my complaint.
3 If thou, LORD, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss, * O Lord, who may abide it?
4 For there is mercy with thee; * therefore shalt thou be feared.
5 I look for the LORD; my soul doth wait for him; * in his word is my trust.
6 My soul fleeth unto the Lord before the morning watch; * I say, before the morning watch.
7 O Israel, trust in the LORD; for with the LORD there is mercy, * and with him is plenteous redemption.
8 And he shall redeem Israel * from all his sins.
9 Eternal rest * grant unto them, O LORD.
10 And let perpetual light * shine upon them

Please also pray for the repose of the soul of Michael Davies

great defender of Catholic truth in modern times, pictured here with the then Cardinal Ratzinger

Of your charity, pray for the repose of the soul of Cardinal Joos

who died one year ago today after celebrating the Second Mass of All Souls.

O God, who among thy apostolic priests didst adorn Thy servants with pontifical dignity, grant we beseech Thee, that they may also be associated with Thine apostles in everlasting fellowship. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end. Amen.

The tomb of Cardinal Joos today

Buried just outside the door of the parish which he so loved.
