The Great Church Give Away in the Czech Republic as Church in meltdown. Bishop: "We offer Churches because there are no believers who would go to them"

Krásno, Bublava, Kostelní, Lomnice and hundreds of others. The Pilsen diocese no longer has the money to maintain and repair a number of churches or chapels. It is gradually abandoning the buildings, or rather trying to transfer them to municipalities or associations free of charge. In the Karlovy Vary region, the Pilsen diocese is also offering or has already transferred several monuments. The list in question does not exist. According to Pilsen bishop Tomáš Holub, however, the main reason for this step is also the decrease in believers.

"Specifically, there are no believers in the border region who would use the churches anymore. That is the main reason why the church is transferring them to municipalities or associations free of charge. There is no specific list, because we negotiate with everyone about the transfer proposal individually. It is not that we have lists that we are trying to enforce, but it is based on a dialogue that is 99 percent always very accommodating from both sides," says Pilsen bishop Tomáš Holub. In the territory of the diocese, which is most of the Pilsen region and the entire Karlovy Vary region, only one percent of the population is said to be practicing.
