Modernist theological speculations reach new depths ""Angels are actually queer"

Angel researcher explains special features of archangels

Their names are Michael, Gabriel and Rafael. The Catholic Church remembers the archangels this Friday (Cathcon: Just Saint Michael in the pre-Conciliar calendar). The theologian Uwe Wolff knows that they play a crucial role not only in the Christian religion.

DOMRADIO.DE: What makes Michael, Gabriel and Rafael so special that they are singled out in contrast to the nameless group of angels?

Dr. Uwe Wolff (theologian, cultural scientist and angel researcher): We learn something about you and your work. Let's start with Gabriel. He brings the good news to Mary that God is being born. Gabriel also appears in Islam. Then he comes to the Prophet Mohammed and announces the Koran, the birth of the new religion.

The older ones among us still know that Rafael is the classic name of the archangel who watches over hospitals. For example, there is the “Raphaelsklinik” in Münster.

Michael is the angel with the sword. The angel of autumn who fights against evil. He does this not only out in the world, but above all within us. These three archangels are, so to speak, the heavenly triumvirate.

DOMRADIO.DE: You always look for strange references and unusual stories in your books. Is there one thing that comes to mind specifically about Michael?

Wolff: Michael is the patron saint of many churches. Churches for Michael have been built in Germany since the tenth century. This means that the church is actually supposed to be a place of angels.

Uwe Wolff  "Heaven and the angels think hierarchically."

DOMRADIO.DE: In popular belief, angels are actually winged creatures with blonde, curly hair and are associated with women. But the “Angel Ladder Group” is explicitly male. So does the same hierarchy that exists on earth also prevail in heaven?

Wolff: The first and great angel researcher, Dionysius of Areopagus, wrote two books. One is about the heavenly hierarchy of angels. The church hierarchy is derived from this; the two are very closely related. This is strange to us today because we think democratically, but heaven and the angels think hierarchically. But not in the sense that hierarchy is negative and oppresses others, or military, but a healing, clear order and structure.

To put it a bit casually, the angels are actually queer. They go through all genders. This can be seen particularly well with Gabriel. You can't be sure whether it's a man or a woman. But this is done very consciously; in the past, people spoke of “androgynous”, i.e. man and woman in one.

This does not mean a hermaphrodite being, but rather soul aspects. The male and female live in the angels in a holy order. We understand very little about this today. That's why the angel festivals are so important that they remind us of this again. Everything has an order somewhere.

DOMRADIO.DE: You yourself once described the angels as “God’s street workers”. What do you mean?

Wolff: To exaggerate somewhat, it can be said that angels go where reverends do not go. So you are at the forefront, where God speaks directly to people, where he is needed. Angels aren't afraid to get their hands dirty either.

So they are very specifically “on the street”, as the expression also suggests, with those who do not belong to society, who are on the margins. Angels are in the hospitals, in the protective workshops and everywhere else. Angels in human form are the “street workers of God”.

DOMRADIO.DE: Are you convinced that angels really exist?

Wolff: Absolutely. Otherwise it would be completely pointless for us to talk to each other. We're not talking about fantasies here. I would never say that I have experienced the angel and that is why it exists. This is the cultural history of humanity itself, not just Christianity.

We owe the angels to Judaism. And as I said, Islam also worships angels. People have been talking about angelic experiences since time immemorial. Individuals can fool around a bit and come up with things like that, but not human history. She is the proof. Angels really exist.

Uwe Wolff "Angels are always free."

DOMRADIO.DE: Let's talk about the esotericists who work a lot with angels. What role do the archangels play there?

Wolff: Esotericism means “introspection”, i.e. mysterious knowledge. In my opinion, the esotericists are a bit crazy. Why? Because the angels are always grace, always a gift. They come voluntarily, and they often come unexpectedly.

Esotericism tries to make a system out of it. So you mix angel cards, angel oracles, you learn how to contact the angel. You don't have to do any of that. Angels are always free, they fly into our lives and suddenly they are there.

DOMRADIO.DE: There seems to be a great need for angels among people. Could the church offer a little more?

Wolff: Absolutely. I have been publishing books about angels since 1989, have given countless lectures and repeatedly pointed them out. The church has this tradition of angels, not only the three archangels, but also the guardian angels. This is an incredible gift.

But the church has always had difficulty dealing with the angels. Why? That's quite obvious. The good Lord is pursuing a double strategy, so to speak. On the one hand he has mediation via the church, the "una sancta catholica et apostolica" and on the other hand he has a kind of direct intervention force. When the church falls into crisis, he sends the angels to get the whole thing going again.

This can already be read in the book of Acts. That's why it's no coincidence that in this day and age, this great time of change, crisis and renewal, we keep asking about the angels. It would be very nice if the church said that it wasn't just about this one path, but about many.

I am a passionate Catholic, I am a convert and only two years ago I entered the Catholic Church voluntarily and with a lot of happiness and love. The angels are with us in the Eucharist, in every mass.

We always sing the Gloria, the Sanctus and we celebrate the Eucharist with the angels. Nobody notices that anymore. We just sing over this Hallelujah, Gloria and the Sanctus. These are all quotes from the world of angels. That means the angels are always there.
