Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aparecida will not have any more mosaics by Rupnik. One already installed will stay.
After a time of deliberation, the Church in Brazil has determined that the four main facades of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida will not be adorned with the mosaics of Marko Ivan Rupnik, expelled from the Society of Jesus after being considered the author of sexual abuses against nuns that he committed over many years.
Inaugurated last year, the first of the mosaics in the sanctuary covers 43,000 square feet. Work on another façade is progressing, while the remaining ones are still awaiting the start of the work, paralyzed after the abuse cases of the ex-Jesuit priest became known.
In principle, the decision will not affect the first mosaic, which will not be removed. Precisely in the Sanctuary of Lourdes it has not yet been decided what to do with the mosaics of the Slovenian priest.
