Cardinal: Bishops could also enter into dialogue with the German right

The chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, has not categorically ruled out discussions with the newly elected AfD party in the German Parliament, the Bundestag. "When any party represented in the Bundestag who wishes to have a dialogue with us, we will examine with them and clarify how such a conversation can take place. There is no general refusal to talk to any party on the part of the German bishops. This is quite clear to me, "said Marx on Thursday at the conclusion of the four-day autumn meeting of German Bishops' Conference in Fulda.

Frau Merkel in happier days.

Marx made a recommendation to the parties after the Bundestag elections last Sunday: "A verbal disarmament appears urgently necessary." The AfD, which became the third strongest force with 12.6 per cent, had formulated in election battle announcements that it wanted to hunt down Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). In all political confrontations, the respect for the other should take precedence, said Marx. In the struggle for the best solutions to the society, hate and exclusion are not appropriate.

Before political discussions are held by church representatives, however, the parties should first sort themselves out. "I see no urge for hurrying.  Everyone should be in peace with this new parliament, "said Marx.
