Cardinal Gerhard Müller on confessions heard by priests of the Society of St Pius X (K-TV, 6 July): “The confessions are valid but unauthorised, for the power to forgive and retain sins is, after all, conferred through the sacrament of Holy Orders. It can only be restricted in its exercise by the bishop or the Pope, in accordance with canon law.”
