New Archbishop of Belém priority is to preach COP30 not the Cross. Admires Rupnik's art which covers Cathedral interior
Archbishop Julio Endi Akamine advocates for the Church's active participation in COP 30: 'helping people'
Speaking about the beginning of his pastoral mission in the city, the new archbishop of Belém commented on the importance of the climate discussion in the Amazon region.
The new Archbishop of Belém, Archbishop Julio Endi Akamine, highlighted the importance of the Catholic Church's participation in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will be held in the capital of Pará in 2025. According to him, the event needs to go beyond institutional discussions and directly involve the residents and local communities of the Amazon region. "We also intend to ensure that COP is not just an event." "It's a dialogue between key leaders, but it can also help people, citizens, discuss and reflect on climate change. Above all, it's about changing personal habits," the archbishop stated. Archbishop Julio Endi Akamine emphasized that the Church is already involved in the issue of climate change through the work of the Vatican and Amazonian dioceses. He explained that local churches are expected to actively contribute to the debate and with concrete awareness-raising actions.
"The Church's participation is high-level, because the Holy See is a member of the COP30. But, beyond that, the dioceses and particular churches here in the Amazon are directly involved in holding the conference," he said. With the central theme of COP30 focused on tackling climate change, Archbishop Julio emphasized that the Church's mission will be to encourage dialogue, listening, and environmental responsibility, especially since it is located in the "heart of the Amazon."
I am not sure when these photographs were actually taken. The full horror of the Rupnik work in the Cathedral of Holy Mary Mother of Jesus of the Diocese of Castanhal which became a diocese in its own right within the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Belém do Pará in 2004. The Rupnik work was first installed in 2014 but it could have been an ongoing project.
