Feast of St Daniel, the Prophet

Traditionally, Daniel is considered to be the author of the Old Testament book that bears his name. Daniel speaks of a Messiah, an anointed one who is “cut off” (9:25-26). Jesus fulfills this prophecy and He also takes the title “Son of Man” from Dn 7:13, which He constantly uses to refer to Himself. The Son of Man is given authority by God and worshipped by all peoples (7:14). Besides the title “Son of Man,” the gospels use the cryptic phrase “abomination of desolation” from Dn 9:27 (see Mt 24:15, Mk 13:14).

Daniel and his companions lived as a minority people under intense persecution for their nationality and their religion. Their fidelity to the Lord under such difficult circumstances is an enduring witness for us to be faithful in the midst of suffering. The examples of pagan kings (Nebuchadnezzer, Belshazzar) whose pride leads to their disgrace serves to illustrate an important biblical principle (Prv 16:18, 29:23).

Daniel is a snapshot of the lives of the Jewish exiles in the Babylonian empire. Yet it is not merely a collection of nice stories, but a spiritual testimony which shows how it is possible to be faithful to the Lord in trying situations. Daniel anticipates Jesus the Messiah and teaches lasting spiritual truths about living for God. The Canticle of the Three Youths, prayed every Sunday morning in the Liturgy of the Hours, is taken from Daniel 3.

At Rome, the holy virgin Praxedes, who was brought up in all chastity and in the knowledge of the divine law. Assiduously attending to watching, prayer and fasting, she rested in Christ, and was buried near her sister Pudentiana, on the Salarian road.

At Babylon, the holy prophet Daniel.

At Marseilles, the birthday of St. Victor, a soldier. Because he refused to serve in the army and sacrifice to idols, he was thrust into prison, where he was visited by an angel, then subjected to various torments, and finally being crushed under a millstone, he ended his martyrdom. With him also suffered three soldiers, Alexander, Felician, and Longinus.

At Troyes, St. Julia, virgin and martyr. In the same place, the martyrdom of the saints Claudius, Justus, Jucundinus, and five companions, in the time of the emperor Aurelian.

At Comana, in Armenia, the holy bishop and martyr Zoticus, who was crowned under Severus.

At Strasburg, St. Arbogastus, a bishop, renowned for miracles.

In Syria, the holy monk John, a companion of St. Simeon.

And elsewhere in divers places, many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins.

July is the Month of the Most Precious Blood

This Litany in honor of Jesus in His Most Precious Blood was drawn up by the Sacred
Congregation of Rites and promulgated by Pope John XXIII on February 24, 1960. The
devotion to Jesus in His most Precious Blood was first popularized by St. Gaspar del
Bufalo (1786-1837, feast Dec. 28) who founded the Missioners of the Most Precious
Blood. A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who recite this litany.

CHAPTER 42:  NO ONE IS TO SPEAK AFTER COMPLINE

1 At all times silence is to be studiously kept by monks, especially during the hours of night.  
2 And this is to be the case in all seasons, whether fast days or a days with a noon meal: 
3 if it is a day with a noon meal, as soon as they have risen from dinner all are to be seated together and someone is to read from the Conferences or Lives of the Fathers, or something else which will edfy the hearers; 
4 but not from the Heptateuch or Kings, since it is not helpful for those of weak understanding to hear those parts of Scripture at that hour: they should be read at other hours.
5 If it is a fast-day, then after a brief interval following the saying of Vespers they are to gather for the reading of the Conferences as we have said. 
6 And having read five or four pages, as the hour permits, 
7 all are to gather during the interval provided by this reading, even those occupied in some assigned project: 
8 when all have gathered together they are to say Compline; and when they go out from Compline no one is allowed to say anything further to anyone; 
9 but if anyone is found evading this rule concerning restraint of speech he is to be severely punished, 
10 unless the necessities of guests supervened or the abbot gave someone a command: 
11 but even this is to be done with the greatest seriousness and proper moderation.
