Visitation of Heiligenkreuz to take place in October. Jesuit interviewed by Austrian radio on the case

The Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz is to be investigated on Papal orders. A date has now been set for this – and the visitators have also been confirmed. An Austrian member of the order provides some context.

The Austrian Conference of Religious Orders has announced the date for the visitation of the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz. A statement issued Tuesday evening stated that the visitation will take place in the fall. The abbot primate of the Benedictines, Jeremias Schröder, and the Secretary General of the Austrian religious orders, Christine Rod, are responsible.

A leaked letter from the Vatican states: "The visitators are tasked with thoroughly examining the leadership style of the abbey as a whole, as well as the personal leadership behavior of the abbot." Another focus is "the question of how allegations of abuse and other serious misconduct are handled." In addition, the visitors will examine the procedures for discerning vocations, the initial phase of formation, and ongoing professional development within the community. The visitors will present their findings to the order's dicastery.

Jesuit: Visitation only in cases of serious abuses

Transparency and clarification are the order of the day, said Jesuit Andreas Batlogg in the morning journal of Austrian Radio on Wednesday. Such a visitation is only ordered by the Vatican when something serious has occurred and corresponding indications of abuse have emerged. However, he does not want to participate in speculation. It is the task of the visitors to get to the bottom of the matter.

This is undoubtedly not a pleasant situation for the Cistercian monastery in the Vienna Woods, said the religious. He has full confidence in the two Visitors that they will conduct the investigation thoroughly and professionally. Batlogg added that the Vatican's dicasteries also work professionally.

Just to complete the narrative given above, Father Batlogg talks about:

Allegations of abuse

The leadership style of Abbot Heim

The role of the Waldstein affair which is says is not cited but will be considered.  The views of Massimo Faggioli on Waldstein are raised.

The possibility of a need for a new internal renewal and the two nuns heading the Dicastery are considered progressive by right-wing Conservatives and it is suspected their ideology may have initiated the Visitation
