Feast of Saint Gregorio Barbadigo

Gregorio Giovanni Gaspare Barbarigo (16 September 1625 – 18 June 1697) was an Italian cardinal and is venerated as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the Bishop of Bergamo and later as the Bishop of Padua. Barbarigo was a frontrunner in both the 1689 and 1691 papal conclaves as he had distinguished himself for his diplomatic and scholastic service. He became noted as a scholar for his distinguished learning and as an able pastor for his careful attention to pastoral initiatives and frequent parish visitations. Barbarigo's beatification was celebrated in 1761 under Pope Clement XIII, while Pope John XXIII canonized the late cardinal in 1960; the latter pope held Barbarigo as a great role model and fostered a devotion to him since the pope had hailed from Bergamo. His liturgical feast is on 17 June in the General Roman Calendar of 1960. On the General Roman Calendar of 1969, it is observed on 18 June which was also the date observed when he was a Beatus prior to 1960. [Maybe a day late then!)

This Day, the Eighteenth Day of June

At Rome, on the Ardeatine road, in the persecution of Diocletian, the birthday of the saintly brothers Marcus and Marcellian, martyrs, who were arrested by the judge Fabian, tied to a stake, and had sharp nails driven into their feet. As they ceased not to praise the name of Christ, they were pierced through the sides with lances, and thus went to the kingdom of Heaven with the glory of martyrdom.

At Malaga, in Spain, the holy martyrs Cyriacus, and the virgin Paula, who were overwhelmed with stones, and yielded up their souls to God.

At Tripoli, in Phoenicia, in the time of the governor Adrian, St. Leontius, a soldier, who, through bitter torments, attained to the crown of martyrdom, together with the tribune Hypatius and Theodulus, whom he had converted to Christ.

The same day, St. Aetherius, martyr, in the persecution of Diocletian. After enduring fire and other torments, he was put to death with the sword.

At Alexandria, the passion of St. Marina, virgin.

At Bordeaux, St. Amandus, bishop and confessor.

At Sacca, in Sicily, St. Calogerus, hermit, whose holiness is principally manifested by the deliverance of possessed persons.

At Schongau, St. Elizabeth, virgin, celebrated for her observance of monastic discipline.

And elsewhere in divers places, many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins..

June is the Month of the Sacred Heart

O most merciful Jesus, lover of souls, I beseech Thee, through the agony of Thy most holy Heart and through the sorrows of Thy Immaculate Mother, wash in Thy Blood the sinners of the whole world who are now in their agony and will die today.
