The battle to succeed Cardinal Schönborn in Vienna. Candidates. Or will it be a Vatican dark horse?
These are the candidates
Behind the scenes: Battle for Schönborn's successor rages
The successor to Cardinal Christoph Schönborn remains undecided. Now a top candidate for the position seems to be emerging.
The powerful bishopric in Vienna has been vacant for over five months. Following the death of Pope Francis, the decision now lies with his successor, Leo XIV, who is considered the "Lion of Hope." The search for a successor to Cardinal Christoph Schönborn now appears to be entering its decisive phase.
The experienced Secretary General of the Austrian Bishops' Conference, Peter Schipka, is considered the favorite, according to a report in the "Krone" newspaper. He is well-connected in church politics and is considered liberal – and has already signaled his willingness to take office. He previously caused a stir in the chat scandal surrounding former Chancellor Kurz and Thomas Schmid, where he resolutely defended himself against political pressure.
Father Karl Wallner is also mentioned as a dark horse. The conservative theologian recently openly positioned himself in an interview – "not out of vanity," he emphasized. However, his hometown, Heiligenkreuz Abbey, has become the focus of Vatican and criminal investigations due to allegations of abuse. 25 anonymous letters are placing a heavy burden on the monastery's leadership.
Outsiders and Possible Surprises
Bishop Hermann Glettler of Innsbruck and his Styrian counterpart Wilhelm Krautwaschl also have outsider chances. A surprise candidate from the Vatican itself is also not out of the question.
