Pope gives Cardinal Tagle his own titular bishopric
Albano titular bishopric for Cardinal Tagle
Also on Saturday, Pope Leo XIV assigned the Filipino Cardinal Tagle his own previous titular bishopric of Albano, south-east of Rome. Before the recent conclave, Tagle was seen as a possible candidate for a continuation of the open approach to the Catholic Church begun under Pope Francis.
As a so-called suburbicarian diocese, Albano is reserved for a cardinal bishop. The then Cardinal Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, was only assigned it by his predecessor Francis in February 2025; however, he never officially took possession of it due to scheduling difficulties. Tagle previously had a less prestigious titular church in the Roman suburb of Centocelle. Before Prevost, the long-serving Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano (1927-2022) had the titular bishopric of Albano.
