Pope delays announcement of Schönborn's successor in Vienna. Bishop Glettler being considered for the top job.

Schönborn's Successor: Decision continues to be delayed

Pope Leo XIV has been appointing new bishops worldwide since taking office, but the Archdiocese of Vienna will likely have to wait a little longer. Cardinal Christoph Schönborn has been retired as archbishop since mid-January, but a decision on his successor is still pending.

According to APA information, the Archdiocese of Vienna does not expect a decision before the summer. The archdiocese is currently headed by the Vatican-appointed Apostolic Administrator, Josef Grünwidl.

After Grünwidl's appointment, church circles had actually assumed that a new archbishop would be appointed within six weeks. However, the decision-making process in the Vatican was delayed, not least due to the death of Pope Francis. Innsbruck diocesan bishop Hermann Glettler is being discussed as a possible new Archbishop. However, as is often the case, surprises during the search are easily possible.

Several new bishops already appointed

Pope Francis' successor got to work quite quickly, and since mid-May, Pope Leo XIV has been appointing new Bishops again. His first personnel decision concerned a new auxiliary Bishop in Peru – more on this in Leo XIV's first bishop appointment affects second home Peru.

The fact that the new Pope himself worked in the South American country for many years is interpreted within the Church as pure coincidence. Nevertheless, he is likely to continue his predecessor's line and prioritize dioceses in Latin America, as well as Asia, considering the other bishop appointments.

The Dicastery for Bishops in the Vatican is primarily responsible for the search for the new archbishop, which works closely with the nuncio – the Vatican's "ambassador" to Austria. The current Pope himself presided over the dicastery; a successor has not yet been appointed. The final decision, however, rests with the head of the Church, who usually approves the personnel decision with his signature. The appointment will be communicated in the papal “Bollettino”
