Parish priest celebrates Mass dressed in the colours of the French football team. Christ displaced by football support in France.

IN SAINT-POL-SUR-TERNOISE, THE PRIEST SAYS MASS FOR THE BLUES- from 2016 and onwards!

The clergy are also supporting the Blues. In any case, the small church in Saint-Pol-sur-Ternois in the Pas-de-Calais region of France vibrated to the rhythm of Les Bleus at service time on the morning of 10 July.

A blue and red stole flowing down the white alb, and here was the parish priest of Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise dressed in the colours of the French team. The priest was keen to celebrate his affection for our footballers at Sunday mass on the morning of the Euro final between France and Portugal at the Stade de France on 10 July. The cameras of France 3 Nord-Pas-de-Calais followed the clergyman.

"When there are joyful times, the Church is there too!"

As well as preaching in tricolour, Abbé Pierre-Marie Leroy insisted that his flock show their support for the French national team by wearing its colours.

For the priest, it's both a question of humour and a necessity: "We need a bit of humour in the Church. We've been through a lot of difficult times since the terrorist attacks and the social and economic crisis. When there are happy times, the Church is there too!

And, in a ritual that is now well-established just about everywhere in France, it all ended... with a clapping session on the square in front of the church.
