Anticlerical synodalists threaten to deprive the Church of income to get their way
Equality now!
Media release
At the last meeting of the project community on September 27, 2023 in Lucerne, there was lively and very committed discussion. It became (again) obvious that the reform forces in Switzerland are already active in many places and in a variety of ways. Despite all our work, we are also aware that the need for action is large and broad.
It is time for clear signals.
Many signs are already being set: there are bonfires, wailing walls, signature collections and much more, as well as the campaign “We are taking off the garb of clericalism” (information on this will soon be available on Gleichwuerdig.ch).
It's time to take responsibility.
At all church levels, responsibility must be taken for what happened, but also for the structural change. This also includes a critical self-awareness of where and how the system of clericalism is supported.
It’s time to step up the pressure – including financially.
The state church legal bodies are challenged to increase their influence on the bishops. Individual parishes keep money back. This is an important signal. Regional churches advise on how they can increase the pressure. The Roman Catholic Central Conference RKZ makes realizable demands in a timely manner and reserves the right to link the payment of funds to them. Agreements and the most coordinated approach possible at all levels of state church law are important for success.
Those affected by abuse, who are now doing an extraordinary amount of publicity and awareness work, need financial support. Instead of the diocesan collections, parishes can collect money for organizations of those affected by abuse.
It is time to put pastoral care above canon law.
In many places, church regulations are deliberately and carefully ignored because pastoral care is given priority over canon law. More such violations of the law are needed. The Catholic Equality Alliance connects people and parishes who take such steps in a protected space.
There are parishes that assure their pastors that they will be able to keep their jobs even if their episcopal work permit is revoked due to pastorally-based non-compliance with church regulations. This is worth imitating.
It is time to be an equal church.
Only a church of equal worth is credible and has a future. In many places and in the Equal Catholic Alliance, steps towards equality are being taken, practiced and developed.
It's time to unite.
People and organizations who want a different church and already live it come together in the Catholic Equality Alliance. With their name they visibly stand up for an equal and credible church.
