Mayor Olivier Lepick lodged a complaint after several dozen demonstrators close to the Civitas organisation prevented an organ recital from taking place on 13 May.

Two people will be tried for violating freedom of expression and wilful violence after incidents in a Church in Carnac (Morbihan) provoked by fundamentalist Catholics opposed to a concert, the Lorient public prosecutor's office said on Thursday 1 June.

These two people, "a 29-year-old man living in Morbihan" and "a woman from a neighbouring department", were identified during investigations by the Carnac gendarmerie, Lorient public prosecutor Stéphane Kellenberger said in a statement, confirming a report in Ouest-France.

They will be tried on 13 March 2024 for unauthorised demonstration and "concerted obstruction and threat to the exercise of freedom of expression" for him, and for deliberate violence for her. The mayor of Carnac, Olivier Lepick, lodged a complaint after several dozen demonstrators close to the fundamentalist Catholic organisation Civitas prevented an organ recital by the American artist Kali Malone from taking place on 13 May at the Church of Saint-Cornély in Carnac.

According to the mayor, a local councillor was slapped in the face with cries of "Get thee behind me, Satan!", and he had to cancel the concert, which the demonstrators accused of featuring a profane work. According to the public prosecutor, the 29-year-old man told the investigators that his action had been "spontaneous but denied any obstruction". The woman admitted that she may have "slightly pushed" someone, without knowing that she was a local councillor".
