Defending the indefensible ex-Jesuit Rupnik

The Aletti Centre comes to Rupnik's defence and accuses the Jesuits of "favouring a media campaign".

Maria Campatelli and the Centro Aletti team have issued a statement in defence of Jesuit Marko Rupnik, recently expelled from the Society of Jesus.

In the statement, the defenders of the priest and artist affirm that "the decree of resignation is motivated by Father Rupnik's refusal to observe the vow of obedience with regard to a new mission that the Order, with a note dated 9 March 2023, had entrusted to him with a transfer to a Jesuit community in Lombardy".

Campatelli qualifies that although it is "fair and exhaustive information, the story that motivated the resignation deserves a reconstruction that takes into account at least other elements".

"Inexplicably, the press release of the DIR (Interprovincial Houses and Works of the Society of Jesus) does not reveal that it was directly Father Marko Rupnik, already on 21 January last, to present to the Society of Jesus, observing all the required canonical conditions, a request to leave the Order, since trust in his superiors had completely ceased once they unfortunately gave repeated attempts to favour a media campaign based on defamatory and unproven accusations (which have exposed the person of Fr. Rupnik and the entire Aletti Centre to forms of lynching), instead of providing the press with correct information based on facts and documents, in their possession, demonstrating a truth different from the one published", reads the Aletti Centre's statement.

They also denounce that "the DIR communiqué omits to inform that, for the same reasons of mistrust towards the superiors, the other Jesuits of the Aletti Centre have also requested a pardon to leave the Society and are awaiting the conclusion of the relative procedure, in order to be able to continue the exercise of their priestly ministry".

"Rupnik, the illogical character of the new missio with transfer that was entrusted to him on 9 March seems intuitive, except for wanting to grasp the purely instrumental purpose of pre-establishing (as in fact happened) the prerequisite of disobedience on which to base the decree of dismissal", they add.

This is why they confirm that "Father Rupnik will remain firm in his already expressed desire to leave the Order, continuing to live this moment in discernment and ecclesial communion".
