Bishops who rose from their graves


Feast of Saint Gondulphus, Bishop of Tongeren. According to legend, he and his predecessor Saint Monulphus rose from their graves in order to attend the dedication of Aachen Cathedral. In the background: the church of Saint Servatius in Maastricht. It appears that the legend orgination from the their solemnly exhumation in 1039 by Bishop Nithard of Liège and Gerard of Florennes, Bishop of Cambrai, in the presence of Henry III, Holy Roman Emperor. An epitaph commemorating this event was later misinterpreted, giving rise to the legend.
