Bell tower of Martin Luther Church in Montabaur blown up
The bell tower of the former Protestant Martin Luther Church in Montabaur was blown up on Wednesday evening. The tower fell over to the side as planned.
The area around the tower was briefly closed off within a radius of 300 metres, according to blaster André Schewcow.
Some spectators watched the blast from a safe distance as the tower toppled over as planned shortly after 6pm.
Flats to be built on the site
The pastor of the Protestant parish of Montabaur, Anne Pollmächer, had not expected a large crowd of spectators beforehand. The church, built in 1967, had already been partly dismantled for months. Most of the parishioners had already been able to say goodbye to their place of worship.
The building and its grounds were sold to a private investor about a year ago for reasons of renovation and cost. After the demolition of the church, houses and flats are to be built there, a spokeswoman for the Montabaur municipality said.
Cathcon: A symbol for what is happening to the churches, Catholic and Protestant throughout Europe. The Church is being demolished while Rome synods.
