Marx: "Church without theology becomes totalitarian ideology"
Archbishop of Munich and Freising celebrates service at start of LMU lecture period
At a service to mark the start of the lecture period at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Cardinal Reinhard Marx emphasised the importance of theology. It is important "that theology, thinking about God, reflecting on the doctrine of God, also has and must have a place at the university in the future", because otherwise a part of thinking is put on hold, said Marx.
Thinking could not be "reduced to the purely scientific, empirical", but had to reach further. The Church also needs the University and the insights gained at it: "A Church without theology, which does not always reasonably question and reappraise its own life, liturgy and confession - its own practice, its own history - becomes a totalitarian ideology," said the Archbishop of Munich and Freising on Wednesday evening, 19 April, in the Munich University Church of St. Ludwig. Addressing the students, the Cardinal emphasised the relevance of studying and thinking to broaden horizons as well as "that you believe, that you celebrate and that you pray".
Cathcon: I would add that the Church with the wrong theology becomes totalitarian ideology.
