Feast of Saint John of God

Founder of the Hospitallers. A large crowd of people from all over Granada formed in front of the hospital, because everyone knew that there were still many sick people inside who had to be taken out. People were worried, but frozen, paralyzed. How to get in there? Anyone who dared to do so risked their lives.

When John learned of the fire from God, he thought only of the sick and immediately went to the place. As soon as he arrived, he too recognized the terrible extent of the fire, but he knew what God wanted of him. There was no time to think. There were still many sick people in there, some of whom had even been his fellow sufferers, who needed help, someone to pull them out of this fiery inferno. So, prompted by the Lord, he threw himself into the burning hospital without thinking about his life and gradually took out all the sick. Castro records that John of God also secured furniture, beds, clothing, and other items. The flames and smoke were so intense that no one believed he would get out alive. But he came out unharmed, only "his eyebrows were singed", to the astonishment and delight of the many present.
