Father Rupnik under no constraint under the Pope's windows
Father Rupnik's reflection on marriage is still present on the portal of the diocese of Rome, with expressions which, re-interpreted in the light of the sex scandal that has come to light, cannot fail to arouse disgust. Between the Jesuits and the diocese it seems like a race to pretend nothing happened.
More than one person must not have fully understood the seriousness of what Fr. Marko Rupnik has been committing since the mid-eighties; acts that have destroyed the lives of many women and have besmirched the Church, the priesthood and religious life.
The first are precisely the leaders of the Society of Jesus, who - as we have seen - do not seem to have the intention of really clarifying the facts or proceeding with the dismissal of their illustrious brother from the clerical state. After the declaration of the DIR (Interprovincial Houses and Works of the Society of Jesus in Rome), silence fell on the matter, with Rupnik who to date has not yet suffered a sanction proportionate to what he committed (and we recall that the accusations have been declared well founded by the Jesuits themselves). And the only one he had suffered, for the simple fact that it was an "automatic" excommunication, was taken away in record time. And still today it is not known by whom.
Then the members of the Aletti Centre, whose behavior appears totally disconnected from reality. It remains to be seen whether it is a question of misunderstanding of the problem or whether it is the result of the influence of the personality of Rupnik, who was its director for many years. The fact is that the Centre, which - repetita iuvant - continues to keep Rupnik's homilies in full view on its website, has come out with a letter, in which friends are reassured that the work of the atelier will continue. The management team that runs the Atelier is in fact by now «able to assume responsibility for a construction site both from the theological-liturgical and artistic-creative point of view, and from the technical-administrative point of view. This will allow us to fulfill all the commitments made up to now and to take on new ones». So reassures the Center.
Not even a mention of what happened in the letter, perhaps with a heartfelt request for forgiveness for the scandal that the whole Rupnik affair has caused. On the contrary, in a not too veiled way, it is insinuated that it is the Aletti Centre itself that is the martyr of the public revelations of Rupnik's victims: «After several months we turn to all of you to thank you for the closeness that, really many, and many ways, you have manifested to us during this time. The truth is not violent, it is not aggressive, so we wait patiently and confidently for it to reveal itself. Know that there is a time for everything."
Pretending that it's all a fabrication to hit Rupnik was also the line of Cardinal De Donatis (see here); pretending that nothing has happened is instead that of his diocese, which continues to host Rupnik's reflection on marriage in its portal, in the explanation of the image he created for the X World Meeting of Families last year. It has a certain effect to continue listening from Rupnik's speakerphone to the commentary on the mystery "of man and woman, who love each other and are united".
Nothing to complain about how the prophecy of Moses is explained, according to the interpretation of James of Sarug, who sees in the creation of Adam and Eve and in their vocation to union, the marriage between Christ and the Church. However, hearing from her mouth the words of the Syrian bishop: «He gave himself to her, and was born of a poor girl; she / made it of her, and she is tied to him and rejoices with him », cannot leave one indifferent. When one thinks of how Rupnik persuaded his victims to indulge in acts of a sexual nature, precisely motivating them "mystically", justifying them as an overcoming of the moralistic law to which anyone who is pneumatically higher than the others is entitled, one can only remain rather annoyed. Not to mention disgusted.
And in fact Rupnik, also in this reflection, explains the miracle of the wedding at Cana as the term of a "relationship based on the law that comes from the outside and which has progressively been increasingly read and understood in a moralistic way". As if that weren't enough, even the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life, led by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, does not hesitate to re-launch the image of Rupnik and the video of his explanation.
The Youtube channel of the Diocese of Rome also continues to host other catecheses by Rupnik: the explanation of the horrendous renovation of the chapel of the Major Seminary in Rome, completed in April 2021;
the meditation, again at the Roman Seminary, on Eucharistic Adoration, held on 19 February last year;
the intervention to the Council of Prefects of 18 January 2021.
All public interventions by Rupnik, which took place in the period in which the accusations against him had already been deemed credible and he was already subject to the precautionary rules of the Society of Jesus, as well as affected by the excommunication, later revoked. It was a period in which, to watch over Rupnik, it was that Father Verschueren who, a few days ago (see here), explained that it is not good to dismiss him from the clerical state, because otherwise the Society of Jesus would no longer be able to supervise him.
Father Verschueren should also explain how it is possible that, after ascertaining the facts, the Centro Aletti continued to publish Rupnik's books and to propose reprints, without anyone batting an eye. The most incredible is the publication of The day entrusts the story to the day. The father's experience (I ed. December 2019, reprint August 2020), which is still presented as follows today: «A book about an exceptional spiritual father, Father Tomáš Špidlík, through the effects caused in the life of one of his spiritual sons , Father Marko I. Rupnik». Devastating effects.
To understand how important it is to intervene to prevent Father Rupnik continuing to exert his influence by leveraging his priesthood, his identity as a religious, and isolate him from all those people who are still fascinated by his influence, common sense would suffice. But what is emerging from neighboring France may perhaps be more convincing. We will talk about it shortly.
