Perverse image of Passion as Lenten Hanging

Works of art in Innsbruck churches

Contemporary images of the Passion and suffering

Contemporary works of art could be seen in Innsbruck's St. Jacob's Cathedral, the Spitalskirche and St. John's Church during Lent 2022

St. Jacob's Cathedral

MARIAHILF - displaced? - Michael Hedwig

The contrast between absence and immediate proximity is the theme of the art project in Innsbruck Cathedral. The image of grace was transferred from the high altar to the left side altar and can thus be viewed at close range. In the silver altar, on the other hand, a hole is emblazoned instead of the image. The image of Mary is flanked by contemporary approximations of the Mariahilf image by Michael Hedwig and a display case with old miracle books that tell of answers to prayers from the time before the new St. James' Church was built.

Spital Church

lost? - Klaus Giesrigl

A press photo of the border fence between Poland and Belarus served Tyrolean artist Klaus Giesrigl as a model for the Lenten cloth in the church in the heart of the city / Spitalskirche Innsbruck. Giesrigl transferred the image of a single trainer hanging in the barbed wire fence into a drawing using ink and a thin Japanese pen. Above and below the drawing, the artist has applied wood ash from the stove of his home. The Lenten cloth is 144 cm wide and 504 cm high.

St. John's Church

tired? - Carmen Burcic

A large-format photo installation by the Tyrolean artist Carmen Burcic briefly becomes an altarpiece in St. John's Church on the Innrain. The photo installation from the cycle "Private Stages" commemorates artists who are committed to freedom and social justice in Georgia. The image was printed on a 3 x 4.5 metre sheet of fabric and is artfully illuminated from the organ gallery.
