Francis talks of mercy, acts without mercy.

"Unmerciful": Paul Martone thinks Francis is driving traditional believers out of the Church

Paul Martone, a priest from Upper Valais, had been commissioned by the then Bishop Norbert Brunner to celebrate Masses in the Tridentine rite. He regrets that Pope Francis is further restricting the Old Mass: "Those who want to celebrate Mass in the old Rite are not all heretics and schismatics."

Cathcon:  If it is heresy you are seeking, look among the modernists!

"I regret that Pope Francis is so rigorous and strict on this point, as if we have no other worries in the Catholic Church. Those who wish to celebrate Mass in the ancient rite are not all heretics and schismatics. On the contrary, many are suffering from the waning of the faith especially and particularly here in Western Europe. To deny them good will and also loyalty to the Church is unjust and also does not correspond to the truth.

There are black sheep

I cannot understand how Pope Francis can speak so often of mercy and approach who knows what groups with open arms, but be so merciless with regard to the tradition-loving faithful (among whom there are certainly also black sheep).

Cathcon: nothing like the number of black sheep as among the modernists.

Instead of trying to offer these believers a way to express their faith in the way that suits them best, he frustrates them and drives them out of the Church.

Otherwise, there is also talk of inclusion!

In the context of the synodal process, there is always talk of "inclusion", which is quite right. Why not extend this to people who want to celebrate Mass in the old rite?

It is clear that they must of course recognise the Second Vatican Council in principle and also the innovations that have been introduced since then. It is not acceptable that the Mass in the Tridentine rite should be used as a weapon to reject all innovations. Some may do so, but I think this is only a minority.

Cathcon: Pope Benedict was really quite critical of Gaudium et Spes, while at the same time calling it a beautiful document. There is also a problem, in an age where the Second Vatican Council is quoted to the exclusion of other Councils of reconciling the teaching of that Council with its forerunners.  One wonders just how many more years one has to wait for the Council to be received and implemented.

The Catholic liturgy is diverse

Why can't the ancient Mass be seen as an enrichment of the Roman Catholic liturgy, just as there have been various liturgical rites for a long time, such as the Ambrosian Rite practised in Milan, or the rites of the Syro-Malabar Church?

That would be Catholic as I understand it: colourful, open, worldly, generous, without hucksterism. "If only Christ were proclaimed!" writes Paul.

The priest Paul Martone from Upper Valais comments to kath.ch on Pope Francis' tightening of the guidelines for the Old Mass. Paul Martone emphasises that he is making his comments "not as the person responsible for the media in the diocese of Sion", "but as a priest who, after Pope Benedict XVI's re-approval of the Tridentine rite in 2007, was given the task by Bishop Norbert Brunner of celebrating these Masses in Upper Valais".
