Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for the modernist church
In Mayenne, the demolition of the church of Genest-Saint-Isle has begun: relive the descent of the bell tower
A moment of emotion in Genest-Sain-Isle (Mayenne), this Tuesday 14 February 2023. The bells of the Saint-Isle church, whose demolition was decided a few weeks ago, rang one last time at noon, before the bell tower was lowered. This is the most delicate operation of the deconstruction work which started at the beginning of the week. The dismantling of the walls will be done progressively, during the second week of the work. A security perimeter has been established.
A question of safety
"This church, which dates from 1872, has a significant deterioration of the structure and a problem of waterproofing. Since 2005, access to the interior has been forbidden in order to prevent accidents, and in 2006, in order to safeguard the building and avoid accidents to local residents and users of the main road, safety work was carried out", said Nicole Bouillon, mayor, at an information meeting on 3 February.
The municipality is very keen to ensure that the building remains in memory. The choir and the nave will be marked out, a lawn will be laid out with benches inviting people to meditate and the War Memorial located in the Saint-Isle cemetery will be installed on the site of the church in order to avoid water run off and the consequent errosion of soil.
