Cardinal Kasper accuses German church of "lazy trickery"

Kasper: Bishops' self-renunciation is dishonest trickery

"I fully agree with the statement of the lay initiative New Beginning-Neuer Anfang on the Roman letter of 16 January on the question of the Synodal Council. The letter, behind which stands the authority of the Pope and ultimately the Second Vatican Council, is completely unambiguous. It cannot be undermined by tricky reinterpretations.

Every Bishop was conferred the pastoral office in his diocese at his episcopal ordination in the succession of the apostles. He cannot subsequently renounce the exercise of this sacramentally conferred authority in whole or in part by binding himself to a Synodal Council without violating the responsibility conferred on him personally.

The theory of the self-renunciation of the bishops is in reality a dishonest and self-contradictory trickery. Resistance to the Roman letter or its tricky reinterpretation and circumvention, contrary to all well-intentioned protestations, inevitably lead to the brink of schism and thus plunge the people of God in Germany into an even deeper crisis.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Apostles Timothy and Titus. It is worthwhile to read again in the New Testament the letters addressed to them. There they speak of a time when people can no longer stand sound doctrine and no longer want to listen to the truth, but are always looking for new teachers to flatter their ears according to their own desires.

Especially in such a situation it is true: "Proclaim the word, stand up for it, whether one wants to hear it or not." But you "proclaim the Gospel, fulfil your ministry faithfully!"(2 Tim 4:2-6).

Cardinal Walter Kasper, emeritus Cardinal of the Curia, former President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, former professor of dogmatics.

Cardinal Walter Kasper has already spoken out several times with excellent analyses and also sharp criticism of the debates on the German "Synodal Path" and sharply criticised the contents but also the procedures. Read also from Cardinal Walter Kasper here on our site:

Kasper on the Synodal Council: "Such a Supreme Soviet in the Church would obviously not be a good idea."

Cardinal Walter Kasper explained in his lecture for the online study day on "True and False Reform of the Church" already on 19 June 2022 why the current self-commitments of the bishops to renounce the application of canon law are only a "lazy trick" that would be tantamount to a collective resignation of the bishops and why synods can only be extraordinary interruptions and not synodal church governments. But he also formulated why a planned "synodal council" in the form of such a council system was "not a Christian idea, but one coming from a completely different spirit or un-spirit". Kasper: "It would stifle the freedom of the Spirit, which blows where and when it wants, and destroy the structure that Christ wanted for his Church." He also drew a clear comparison to the Synodal Council: "Such a Supreme Soviet in the Church would obviously not be a good idea." The WHOLE article under the title: "Synodality and Renewal" can be found at the link on the New Beginning page.

"The Synodal Path has made itself a farce of a Synod".

Already on 7 November 2021, Cardinal Walter Kasper also commented on the question of the mission of the Church and analysed the Church's own hierarchy during a lecture at an online study day of the New Beginning initiative. The occasion was the Synodal Path document on "Power and Division of Powers in the Church - Sharing and Participating in the Mission". Kasper explores the question: What is the Church for, what does it stand for, what does the episcopate stand for and in what way can all Christians participate in it? On this occasion, however, he also criticised the unsynodal way of life in Germany. Kasper: "So a Synod should not vote down and dismiss a minority without a serious exchange of arguments, as happened at the last meeting of the Synodal Path. In doing so, the Synodical Path has made itself a farce of a synod."  Kasper's lecture entitled: "Authority, Power and Hierarchy in the Catholic Church" can be found in full length here
