Bishop likely to be head of CDF wants to change Church teaching

Bishop Wilmer disappointed about Synodal Way vote

"I have a lot of problems with it".

Bishop Heiner Wilmer of Hildesheim is disappointed with the outcome of the vote on the Synodal Way to change Catholic sexuality teaching. He says this is clearly a setback for church reform projects.

Wilmer made the comments in a statement circulated by the Diocese of Hildesheim. "I voted in favour of the policy paper on the reform of Catholic sexual doctrine and have a great deal of resentment that the two-thirds majority of the bishops was not achieved," he said.

Reform of sexual doctrine remains an issue

Crisis situation at the Synodal Assembly

Wilmer said he understands and shares the disappointment of many Catholics about the failure of the text in the vote on Thursday evening. The reform of the Church's sexual doctrine is and remains an essential issue, he said. "The rejection of the policy paper by a minority of the bishops does not change this," Wilmer continued. He assured the faithful in the diocese of Hildesheim that he would continue to work for a renewal of Catholic sexual morality.

Debate continues after crisis meeting

At the start of the penultimate plenary session of the Synodal Way, the first policy paper on the liberalisation of Catholic sexual morality failed on Thursday because of the Bishops' blocking minority. After a very emotional debate, the Bishops present and the other delegates then discussed the further course of action in separate crisis meetings until late into the night. On Friday, the delegates continued their debate.

The Bishop thinks “Eugen Drewermann is a prophet of our time who is misunderstood by the Church.”  Drewermann is an ex-priest whose licence to teach was withdrawn.  He is a Putin apologist.  He is an ecclesiastical Jeremy Corbyn.

Several Cardinals have been clear about the disaster such an appointment would bring.
