Pope gives his opinion of liturgical standards in Westminster Abbey




“Wherever applause breaks out in the liturgy because of some human achievement, it is a sure sign that the essence of liturgy has totally disappeared and been replaced by a kind of religious entertainment. Such attraction fades quickly - it cannot compete in the market of leisure pursuits, incorporating as it increasingly does various forms of religious titillation.” Pope Benedict in Spirit of the Liturgy.

The applause didn't come during the liturgy to applaud any human achievement, but at the end of the service, as a sign of welcome to the Pope. So this post seems snide and misleading to me

It wasn't a comment from the Pope about yesterday or today's services as I understand it - that was a quote from his book Spirit of the Liturgy, published in 2000.

Yesterday, I thought he looked very content with the applause after the evening prayer at Westminster Abbey.

Wow, one thing I will say is that the Anglicans can sing!!. Would have been nice if the CoE could have brought some Catholic Benedictines in from the local Abbeys to join in the Evensong. Since this was once a Benedictine Abbey. Probably one of the nicest ones around. They don't build them like they used to.
