Given Pope John Paul II was the most progressive Pope in the history of the Church, one cannot be surprised at the disappointment now. Yet all the same progressives who he did so much for, complained bitterly about him at the time
The lifting of the excommunications could have been signed in any year of the previous Papacy after the excommunications themselves which themselves in all Christian charity were unecessary and putatively illicit. Why was it never done? Bishop Williamson would also not at that stage have had a record as long as your arm of pronoucements extra to his episcopal role.
