A San Francisco Board of Supervisors Committee will vote on St. Brigid’s Landmark Application on Wednesday, November 9, 1 p.m., City Hall, room 263.
Please come to this pivotal committee hearing which will decide if St. Brigid, and its magnificent interiors, will become a city landmark.
While the city’s Planning Commission and its Landmarks Advisory Board recommended that both the inside and outside of St. Brigid be protected by as city landmarks, the proposed ordinance now before the Board of Supervisors only provides minimum protections for the exterior of the building.
What’s going on here? Well, on October 24 defying an order from the Department of Building Inspection, San Francisco’s Archdiocese went into St. Brigid and took out many of the church’s 100-year-old artwork and statues – after many members of this committee spent the weekend standing vigil at the church.
There are still many treasures remaining in the church: the Ruffatti organ, magnificent statuary, both from local and Irish artists, the intricately carved Italian marble altars, and the glorious jewel-like stained-glass windows.
But while those things, said the Planning Commission, create the majesty of the church, and resonate with the spirits of 100 years of San Francisco Catholics, they might prove inconvenient for St. Brigid’s new owner, Alicia Stephens, and her Academy of Art College – who have yet to announce specific plans for how they intend to use St. Brigid.
