May is Mary's Month but in the Diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt, it is the Month of Cabaret and Stand-up
Carinthia: Opening of the Cathedral Festival in St. Andrä
In May, the church space will be transformed into an "art space" for cabaret, music, theater, and art.
Following a successful premiere last year, the Cathedral Festival in St. Andrä is entering its second season: Starting May 1, the church space will once again become an "art space" for cabaret, music, theater, and art, in addition to its liturgical function during the Marian month. The Cathedral Festival will open on Friday, May 1, at 6:30 PM with the art exhibition "Cathedral Art II" entitled "Metamorphoses." Works by Oto Rimele, Sandi Cervek, Walter Melcher, Lojze Logar, Gotthard Schatz, Dusan Fiser, and Manfred Mörth will be on display. At 7:30 p.m., the first official concert will begin, featuring Lavanttal artist Edgar Unterkirchner with Echoloft.
Further concerts on the program include Anna Buchegger, winner of the 2021 Starmania casting show, and Stippich & Stippich, who will bring Viennese songs to the Lavanttal. Also on the program are a performance by Diex-based cabaret artist Katrin Winkler-Jandl, the first stand-up program by Ö3 radio host Tom Walek, and Marc Carnal, author and roving reporter for the duo Stermann and Grissemann, who will appear as "God" on Earth. A play by Mario Kuttnig will also be presented.
The team behind the Cathedral Festival told the Kleine Zeitung, the festival's media partner, that they are particularly proud of a premiere: "This year we have our first reading with Carinthian author Alina Lindermuth, who has already been awarded the Bachmann Prize for Young Adult Literature."
Before each event, a surprise menu is planned for 5 p.m. at the Gasthaus Deutscher, which is within walking distance of the cathedral. The series concludes with the "Heavenly Meal," offered on two dates in June, which "sold out last year." For this occasion, the church is decorated and the tables are set. The gourmet menu is prepared by local restaurateurs. "There will also be musical accompaniment, true to our concept," the team adds. (Info: st-andrae.info)
