Apostolic Visitation at Heiligenkreuz Abbey concluded (8 April 2026)

Proposals for the positive development of the community delivered

By decree of 5 June 2025, the Dicastery of Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life ordered an Apostolic Visitation of Heiligenkreuz Abbey and appointed Abbot Primate Jeremias Schröder OSB and Sister Christine Rod MC as visitors. Following in-depth discussions with 90 monks and numerous external individuals, the visitation concludes today. The Abbot President of the Austrian Cistercian Congregation, Abbot Pius Maurer OCist, today presented the Dicastery's letter to the monks of Heiligenkreuz during a chapter meeting of the abbey. Visitor Sister Christine Rod MC addressed initial questions from the monks and explained the findings of the visitation. Abbot Primate Jeremias and Sister Christine Rod will discuss the results of the visitation in more detail with the community at a later date. In the coming months and years, the monks of Heiligenkreuz Abbey will engage intensively with the instructions of the Dicastery, thereby working towards deepening their faith and ensuring the community's future viability. The abbey's rapid growth has presented it with significant internal structural challenges, and the Holy See intends to support Heiligenkreuz Abbey through its instructions. The Dicastery's instructions include:

  • optimized communication within and outside the community, which is essential simply due to the size of the community (over 100 monks);
  • strategic considerations regarding the future of the abbey and prioritization of tasks;
  • reflection on its theological and spiritual orientation;
  • deepening the preparation of young people for monastic life and the priesthood;
  • and a sharpening of the identity and self-image of Heiligenkreuz Abbey.

The Dicastery expressly thanks Abbot Maximilian Heim OCist for his outstanding personal commitment to Heiligenkreuz Abbey, which has contributed to the remarkable flourishing of the community. “During the months of the visitation, I came to know Heiligenkreuz as a spiritual place and experienced a great willingness to cooperate. The Dicastery’s instructions provide an important framework for the future of the Abbey.” (Sister Christine Rod MC, Apostolic Visitor) “Heiligenkreuz Abbey has many good monks who will certainly ensure that its community remains dynamic and monastic. If there are allegations against individual members of the community, Heiligenkreuz will act in accordance with both ecclesiastical and state regulations. The Apostolic Visitation was a valuable impetus for the long-term positive development of the Heiligenkreuz community.” (Abbot President Pius Maurer OCist) “The Heiligenkreuz community thanks the Dicastery and the two visitors for the appreciative discussions during the visitation and the sound guidance for the future.” (Abbot Maximilian Heim OCist)
