Modernists again threaten to leave the Church if they cannot make Her in their own image

Reform group warns of exodus from the Church

Cologne – The Church is losing committed women: The Women's Diaconate Network sees a lack of participation as a key problem. It reaffirms the analysis of a Vatican document and issues a warning.

The Women's Diaconate Network underscores the concern expressed in the recent Vatican study that even more committed women could turn their backs on the Church in disappointment. Jutta Mader-Schömer, chairwoman of the reform group based in Cologne, explained on Wednesday: "From many conversations with women in the diaconate, we know that it is by no means just unease, but simply hurt, disappointment, and incomprehension that women feel due to the numerous rejections of their vocation and the devaluation of their commitment."

Last week, the Vatican Synod Secretariat published a report on the role of women in the life and leadership of the Church. The report describes the clarification of the "woman question" in the Catholic Church as urgent. The 74-page document states that there is a "specific unease among many women regarding their participation in the life of their parishes," especially when compared to the opportunities available to them in secular life. It further states: "A growing number of women of all ages and in different parts of the world no longer feel at home in the house of the Lord—to the point of leaving it entirely."

According to the network, the Vatican document leaves many doors open. Board member and theology professor Margit Eckholt explained that nowhere is it explained why women cannot represent Christ. Other frequently cited obstacles to women's ordination are also either not explained at all or only addressed in the appendix, which outlines the controversial theological debates. According to Eckholt, this will enable "further theological discussions from international perspectives".
