What Cardinal Cobo owes to the controversial priest Josete- from November 2024
Last week, we published on InfoVaticana that the Archbishop of Madrid, José Cobo, recommended that the parish priest of El Pilar take a break. This suggestion arose after a video circulated among priests in Madrid, showing "Josete" in a gay bar in Chueca, boasting about the size of his friend/partner's *****.
The news caused a stir in the Madrid diocese, but the information we have received subsequently sheds new light on Cobo's meteoric rise.
When José Cobo was vicar of the Madrid area, Elías Royón told Pope Francis that the then-archbishop, Carlos Osoro, was no longer in full possession of his mental faculties and that the issue of the foundations could cause him legal problems. At that time, Royón suggested to the Pope that if he wanted to know more about the situation in the Archdiocese of Madrid, he should consult with a young priest: José Castro Cea. Josete's relationship with the Pope became so direct that when he celebrated his 25th anniversary of priestly ordination, he quickly arranged for the Pope to receive them all at the Vatican.
As we mentioned, following this recommendation, the Pope had two telephone conversations with Castro Cea, one lasting 24 minutes and the other 12, at Royón's urging. During these conversations, "Josete" recommended to the Pope that José Cobo was the right man to lead the diocese. What Castro failed to mention, however, was his close, years-long relationship with Cobo, a relationship also shared with other priests in Madrid of similar theological or pastoral leanings, who lived in the same building. It's impossible to believe that Cobo, who lived next door to Josete, didn't know who was coming and going from his neighbor's apartment.
Shortly afterward, Cobo was appointed auxiliary bishop, and the rest is history. He soon became Archbishop of Madrid, a cardinal, and a member of the Congregation for Bishops. The Pope's new confidant in Spain, although possibly, like his predecessors, a "use and discard" figure.
In this context, what is currently happening in the Archdiocese of Madrid becomes more illuminating. According to several sources, José Castro has not yet traveled to the United States (something that was planned since the controversy erupted) but has made it clear to Cobo that he has no intention of leaving the parish. What does Castro know about Cobo to make such a bold move? What does Cobo owe Castro?
The astonishment among the priests of the Vicariate was evident this week when the two appeared together, chatting amicably at a Vicariate meeting attended by Cardinal Cobo and Josete himself. Many of them had already seen the controversial video. Josete has defended himself again, claiming it was all a joke, but it seems Cobo is willing to tolerate the blackmail. Moreover, among the Madrid clergy, there is a certainty that Josete will do whatever he wants, unless Cobo guarantees him a golden retirement, and the perk he offered him of directing the International Institute of Distance Theology doesn't seem to be enough. The silence that needs to be bought doesn't come cheap.
It seems that the "paw patrol," as this group of priests with progressive leanings, and some other shared tendencies, is known in Madrid, is going through a rough patch, and we'll see what comes out in the coming days from José Díaz Lorenzo, Santos Urías, parish priest of San Cayetano, and Toño Casado.
