Meeting with delegates and diocesan officials from around the world, including a 51-member Austrian group of bishops, theologians, and pastoral officials

Quo vadis, Petrus?
The Successor of Peter can either take Roman Road or the Synodal Path

A premiere in the Vatican: Pope Leo XIV plans to meet on Friday for an in-depth discussion with around 2,000 Catholics who are committed to greater active participation of all believers within the Church. The event is part of the Holy Year event for so-called synodal teams and, according to the Vatican, the first joint step in the implementation phase of the World Synod.

This global Catholic reform project, initiated by Pope Francis (2013-2025), provisionally concluded last October with a final document. The guidelines contained therein are to be gradually integrated into the universal Church under the new Pope. Phases are planned at the local, national, and international levels. The final event will be a "general ecclesial assembly" in the Vatican in October 2028.

Large Austrian delegation

Around 2,000 people from all over the world are expected to attend the event from Friday to Sunday. Fifty-one people are traveling from Austria, including Archbishop Franz Lackner and Bishop Josef Marketz from the official national synod team, Markus Welte as coordinator, and theologians Klara Csiszar, Johannes Moravitz, Elisabeth Rathgeb, and Petra Steinmair-Pösel.

Also present on behalf of the Bishops' Conference are Anja Appel from the Co-ordination Office, Angelika Ritter-Grepl from the Catholic Women's Movement, and participants from all Dioceses, including the Graz Bishops Wilhelm Krautwaschl and Johannes Freitag. The largest group is from Graz-Seckau, with a total of 19 people.

A delegation from the German Bishops' Conference, including members of the Central Committee of German Catholics, will also be participating. Representatives of the reform group "We are Church" will also be officially participating for the first time, according to the group's own statements. A delegation from Switzerland is also expected.

In addition to the meeting with the Pope, the program includes discussions, networking events, and a pilgrimage through the Holy Door. The event will conclude on Sunday with a service with Leo XIV in St. Peter's Basilica.

Cathcon:  Click on the labels of the lay people.  Why do these people have authority over other lay people?  It is a horror show so much more to do with the acquisition of power and money than  the Catholic Faith once delivered.  They are not the Church despite their fond imaginings.
