Bavarian Church prefers protecting insects to saving souls
Catholic Church becomes partner of Bavarian Flowering Pact
The Catholic Church in Bavaria is to become a new partner of the Bavarian Flowering Pact. Cardinal Reinhard Marx, as Chairman of the Freising Bishops' Conference, signed a joint declaration on Monday (20 October) with Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber (Free Voters) on cooperation in the promotion of biodiversity and the "Charter for the Protection of Insects", the Archdiocese announced in a press release on Thursday. This would set out concrete activities such as the natural design of areas around churches, kindergartens and cemeteries with native plants.
The Bavarian Flowering Pact was launched by the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment in 2018 to help stop the loss of insects and other species. Partners of the alliance are the associations of Bavarian gardeners, beekeepers, fruit distillers and golfers, numerous local authorities and businesses and, since 2021, the Bavarian Protestant Church.
