Priest suspended after participating in Masonic rites
While Father Weninger remains a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and a practicing Freemason, the Discalced Augustinian Order suspended Father Libby Daños, a priest in Asia, after it was discovered he participated in the blessing of a Masonic monument in Ormoc City, an act considered a violation of Catholic teaching.
In a statement issued Monday, September 1, and signed by Father Luigi Kerschbamer, Prior Provincial, and the Provincial Council of the Province of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino (Asia), it was confirmed that Father Daños participated in the August 11 ceremony in Barangay San Pablo, Ormoc, where the Masonic monument was erected.
Although Father Daños acknowledged his presence, he explained that he was initially unaware of the exact nature of the incident. The Council emphasized, however, that intent in no way diminishes the seriousness of the act.
"This action, whatever the intent, contradicts the clear and consistent teaching of the Catholic Church regarding Freemasonry and has caused scandal among the faithful."
The Catholic Church teaches that membership or participation in Masonic associations is "irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church."
The Order cited the Holy See's Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, which reaffirmed in November 2023, with the approval of Pope Francis, that Catholics are strictly prohibited from joining or approving Masonic activities.
Father Daños, who served the Asian mission for nearly 30 years, expressed "deep remorse" and is cooperating with the canonical investigation. Pending the results, he has been temporarily suspended from public ministry.
