Priest, convicted of child pornography, re-integrated into the Vatican Curia

Carlo Capella, convicted of child pornography, reintegrated into the Vatican Curia

Carlo Alberto Capella: the exemplary reintegration of a Vatican pedophile

In June 2018, InfoVaticana reported the five-year prison sentence of priest Carlo Alberto Capella for possession and exchange of child pornography. Capella, a former diplomat of the Holy See in Washington, was not only not extradited—as requested by US authorities—but, after his return to Rome, he enjoyed freedom of movement within the Vatican for months before his belated arrest. Today, seven years later, we discover that this criminal's reintegration did not consist of caring for his elderly mother in a remote parish, but rather living in San Benedetto, the residence for nuncios, just a few meters from where Pope Leo XIV himself resides.

The information, confirmed by an eyewitness who was with him in the last few hours, shows that Capella is not only free, but also protected and probably active in "internal tasks." Of what kind? We don't know, but in any case, it doesn't seem that his depraved history has prevented his integration into the clerical circles closest to power. Everything indicates that there is a  mafia, far from dissolving, continues to grant safe conduct to its fallen members.

Capella, 51, who admitted to the child pornography charges, performed diplomatic duties for the Vatican that took him from India to Hong Kong to the nunciature in Washington. Originally incardinated in the Archdiocese of Milan, Capella was an assistant priest when, in 2001, the influential Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, the inspiration behind the so-called "Saint Gallen mafia," proposed that he join the Holy See's diplomatic service.

The St. Gallen mafia, to which the previous Pope owed his pontificate, appears to remain active and in power.

Re-integration? No: an institutional cover-up

Meanwhile, hundreds of traditional priests are punished without an altar, without a parish, without the right to a peaceful Mass. But Capella lives in an elite residence. As we are well reminded from Rome, they protect each other. This is not the first time. Nor will it be the last.

Theodore McCarrick, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, a predator for decades, was protected by high-ranking officials until public pressure made it untenable.

Gustavo Zanchetta, the Argentine bishop close to Francis, convicted of sexual abuse of seminarians, was "welcomed" in the Vatican for a career reinvention amid administrative roles, fleeing civil justice with the help of Bergoglio. Francesco Coccopalmerio, an influential cardinal, not only sponsored careers like Capella's, but his secretary was arrested in the midst of a homosexual orgy involving drugs... in an apartment owned by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith—who knows if it was the same apartment later assigned to Cardinal Prevost, who still resides in that building today as Pope.

And now, Capella. A known consumer of child pornography rewarded with a second chance... in the very center of ecclesiastical power.

San Benedetto: Lair of Impunity

The San Benedetto residence is not just a building. It's a symbol. High-ranking Vatican diplomats reside there. Archbishop Bertomeu also lived there upon arriving in Rome, for example. And Capella does so today, alongside Gugerotti, among others.

We are not dealing with isolated cases, but rather with a structure of complicity, a viscous web of silence, favors, cross-promotions, and omertà.

And meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV…

Just a few meters away lives Pope Leo XIV. If he truly wants to break this network—and not just with generic declarations—he must begin by explaining why a convicted priest like Capella remains under the Vatican roof. The purification of the Church does not come through synodal PowerPoints of inclusion, but rather through expelling those who corrupt minors and those who protect them from the Temple.

If we don't act clearly and firmly, the message is only one: this mafia continues to rule. And it does so from within.
