Marko Rupnik Study Group. Studying his "art" not his record of abuse
From 2020, one can only hope they are not still meeting....
Marko Ivan Rupnik Study Group concludes semester with Lecture on Alexander Schmemann
The Marko Ivan Rupnik Study Group, coordinated by Prof. Felipe Sérgio Koller, (Doctor in Theology (PUCPR) and post-doctoral student in Religious Sciences (PUC-Campinas). Professor at Studium Theologicum - Claretian Faculty of Theology, affiliated to the Pontifical Lateran University.) co-founder of the Nazareth Workshop, has concluded another semester of activities. Started in May 2020, the study group currently has two classes, which met this Wednesday (30) for a special lecture on the thought of Orthodox theologian Alexander Schmemann, one of the sources of Rupnik's theological vision.
The group is composed of pastoral workers, architects, artists, seminarians, and others interested in Christian spirituality who wish to delve deeper into a vision of Christian identity that contributes to the experience of belief and life. There are 34 participants from the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Ceará, Alagoas, Maranhão, Pará, Rondônia, and Mato Grosso do Sul.
A theologian, visual artist, and Jesuit priest, Rupnik is the director of the Aletti Center in Rome, a cultural center focused on the study of Christian identity in contemporary times, based on a rapprochement between the Eastern and Western traditions of Christianity and an organic vision that does not separate the lived from the thought. In the study group, we engage with his theological and artistic work, seeking answers to the pastoral challenges of our daily lives.
The first group this semester focused on Rupnik's reflections, which comprise the first part of the work "Teologia pastorale a partire dalla bellezza" ("Pastoral Theology from Beauty"). The second group studied the texts that make up the first cycle of the study group, with excerpts from "According to the Spirit: Spiritual Theology on the Path with the Church of Pope Francis" and "Art as an Expression of Liturgical Life."
Here are some testimonials from students who participated in the group this semester:
"As a layperson, I work in the areas of vocational promotion, pastoral care, and spirituality. In addition to helping me deepen my mission, the study group experience also contributed to the maturation of my faith" (Diego Artur Wust, Capela de Santana - RS).
"I'm an architect and I work in the field of sacred architecture. It contributed greatly to my profession, and meditating on Rupnik's art was essential" (Lívia Saraiva Freire, Fortaleza - CE).
"For me, the course provided a calm and objective humanizing process, reflecting with greater attention and sensitivity on the relationship between 'self and others'" (Andreia Cristina de Faria, Ouro Fino - MG).
"Studying Rupnik's works aligns with what I seek professionally, as an architect, and also as a Christian, in my quest to strengthen my proposed path. Not only is the pursuit of technical knowledge, which also suits me, but also the spiritual growth that occasions like this group provide" (Ana Paula Zerial, Campo Grande, MS).
"Through our study, I was able to deepen the relationship between faith and life, as concretely expressed in pastoral work. It helped me interpret my reality in light of what I believe. It's difficult to find such balanced thinking as what I find in our study group" (Alexandre Amorim, Florianópolis, SC).
"As a journalist working in architecture, I was able to better understand and experience the current state of sacred art through a renowned and contemporary name like Rupnik. However, the greatest benefit came to me as a person, as a Christian. The classes strengthened Christ's message and my understanding of faith, liturgy, communion, community, vocation, and charity." (Luan Galani, Curitiba, Paraná)
