Germany: the number of monks and especially nuns is falling. In 2036, there will be no religious in Germany. The Synodal Path to oblivion

Like the rest of German Catholicism, the number of nuns is falling, according to official statistics from the Catholic Church in Germany:

"In 2024, there were 12,628 women and men, the German Conference of Superiors of Religious Orders (DOK) announced on Monday, in response to a request from the Catholic News Agency (KNA) in Bonn. According to the figures, the number of nuns in particular has fallen by more than 700.

"There are 297 independent generalates, provincials, abbeys and monasteries, with 9,467 nuns living in 883 monastic villages," said DOK spokesman Arnulf Salmen. At the end of 2023, there were still 10,211 nuns living in 923 monastic villages.

According to the report, last year there were 111 independent religious provinces, abbeys and priories belonging to 65 different religious orders. Around 3,200 religious lived in 369 monastic establishments, the spokesman said. In 2023, there will be 3,223 religious in 376 monastic establishments".

The 7% fall in one year also indicates that the number of nuns in Germany is ageing considerably, and that the decline in their numbers and their network can only get worse.
