German Bishops' Conference took its time but finally just about speaks out in defence of human dignity

Discussion on the appointment of judges to the Federal Constitutional Court

Prelate Dr. Karl Jüsten, Head of the Commissariat of the German Bishops and the Catholic Office in Berlin, commented on July 10, 2025, on the current discussion about the appointment of judges to the Federal Constitutional Court:

"The Bundestag and Bundesrat are responsible for the appointment of the Federal Constitutional Court. To the extent that the Bundestag appoints the constitutional judges, each member of parliament is free to make their choice regarding the appointment of the highest court. The legal and legal policy views of the candidates who hold prominent positions are known.

If a concept of the protection of life that is graded according to the human stage of development and viability is advocated and the human dignity of unborn life is questioned, this represents a constitutional paradigm shift. This, incidentally, is not limited to abortion, but can have implications for the worthiness of human life to be protected in various life situations. We as the Church have repeatedly pointed this out, both with regard to the report of the Commission for Reproductive Self-Determination and Reproductive medicine as well as the draft law on the new regulation of abortion presented at the beginning of this year. Both were based on the aforementioned constitutional paradigm shift."
