Bishop proclaims his love of women's football and comes out as an England fan
Bishop Beat Grögli at the European Championship final: "The women will win today"
The new Bishop of St. Gallen, Beat Grögli, is not only very athletic, but also has a heart for women's football. He was at Basel's St. Jakobs Stadium for the final of the Women's European Championship between England and Spain. And: He wore a special fan outfit.
Bishop Beat is currently on vacation – as kath.ch recently reported. He is relaxing at Lake Constance and, at the beginning of his vacation, visited young people who were hosting a weekend at the Chammhaldenhütte at the foot of Mount Säntis – as part of a church youth work project.
Now, Bishop Beat is surprising the public on the Diocese of St. Gallen's Instagram page with a story about his experiences at the final of the Women's European Championship at Basel's St. Jakobs Stadium on Sunday. From the stands in the "Joggeli" (Joggeli Stadium), he enthusiastically watched the thrilling final, in which the English women ultimately secured the European Championship title in a penalty shootout.
The highlight: Bishop Beat wore a white polo shirt for his visit to the stadium as his personal fan outfit, which he apparently designed himself and which expresses his sympathies. On the front of the shirt, which features the crests of the Spanish and English Football Associations, it reads in large letters: "Today the women win."
On the back of the polo shirt, in English, as far as can be seen in the photo, it reads "Well Play" and "God Bless." Above it, the number one.
At shoulder height, a small cross is emblazoned with "Beat." Bishop Beat wishes the players a good game and God's blessing. Both photos were taken on the balcony of a house.
Bishop Beat appears to have come out as a fan of the "Three Lions" team, specifically the English women's team. Photos of him from the stands at the stadium confirm this impression: "It was great!" And: "Bishop Beat is pleased with the good football and the great fairness" – as can be read in the post. Bishop Beat is obviously a true women's football fan.
A small reminder to the Bishop. Crowd pleasing will not do.
