Protest against clubbing in St. Andrew's Church
A DJ clubbing in St. Andrew's Church in the city of Salzburg four weeks ago is now causing controversy. The church is a holy place, say several believers who show no sympathy for the event. The parish leadership admitted mistakes in handling alcohol but stands by the clubbing.
2,000 visitors attended the "Long Night of the Churches" at Salzburg's St. Andrew's Church at the end of May. Their night of partying is now causing controversy, especially among members of the Croatian parish, which holds its services in St. Andrew's Church.
They have launched an online petition entitled "Churches are not discotheques" – with almost 2,200 supporters so far. A church is a holy place and not for parties, according to the tenor of the online comments. During the clubbing, several pews broke. However, the main trigger was alcohol in the church, admitted Roland Rasser, the parish provost of St. Andrä.
Beer entered the church despite entry controls
We were unable to ensure that this room remained alcohol-free at the entrance. "Beer bottles were seen in the church. That caused offense and bothered me a lot," said Rasser. The beer was sold, among other places, at a stand in front of the church. Despite security guards controlling entry, the drinks were brought into the church, Rasser said.
The clubbing during the "Long Night of the Churches" was already the second in St. Andrew's Church. However, the aim is to reach out to groups who are not automatically affiliated with the church and to continue pursuing this approach. The parish provost acknowledged that there is a program that goes beyond church traditions: "It's part of our core mission to not only reach out to those who come to church anyway."
DJ "Slashy Disco" invited via festival chaplaincy
"It's time for us to evaluate what worked and what didn't, and draw conclusions for the future," said Rasser. Next year, in any case, there will be a new concept for the event. Ideas and suggestions are now being developed for this. Contact with Salzburg DJ Wolfgang Felice, who performed under the pseudonym "Slashy Disco," was made through the festival chaplaincy at the Electric Love Festival in Koppl/Plainfeld, said Rasser.
