Feast of Blessed Bishop Paul Burali d'Arezzo

aolo Burali d'Arezzo (1511 – 17 June 1578) was an Italian priest of the Theatine Order, a bishop, and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. His legal skills made him a prominent figure in the law courts of Naples, and then in the councils of government as a defender of the rights of citizens. He abandoned his career to pursue a calling to the religious state, where he became a leader in the Theatine Order. Pope Pius V elevated him to the cardinalate in 1570. He was considered a candidate for the Papacy in 1572, but his stern character did not recommend him to the electors. The new Pope, Gregory XIII, then promoted him to be the Archbishop of Naples, where he served from 1576 to 1578. After his death, he was recognized as beatified and worthy of official recognition by the Church.

This Day, the Seventeenth Day of June

At Rome, during the persecution of Diocletian, the birthday of two hundred and sixty-two holy martyrs, who were put to death for the faith of Christ, and buried on the old Salarian road, at the foot of Cucumber hill.

At Terracina, St. Montanus, a soldier, who received the crown of martyrdom after suffering many torments, in the time of the emperor Adrian and the ex-consul Leontius.

At Venafro, the holy martyrs Nicander and Marcian, who were beheaded in the persecution of Maximian.

At Chalcedon, the holy martyrs Manuel, Sabel, and Ismael, whom the king of Persia sent as ambassadors to Julian the Apostate to treat of peace. Having firmly refused to worship idols, as they had been commanded by the emperor, they were put to the sword.

At Apollonia, in Macedonia, the holy martyrs Isaurus, deacon, Innocent, Felix, Jeremias, and Peregrinus, natives of Athens, who were tortured in different manners by the tribune Tripontius, and finally decapitated.

At Amelia, in Umbria, the bishop St. Himerius, whose body was translated to Cremona.

In the territory of Bourges, St. Gundulphus, bishop.

At Orleans, St. Avitus, priest and confessor.

In Phrygia, St. Hypatius, confessor.

Also, St. Bessarion, anchorite.

At Pisa, in Tuscany, St. Rainerius, confessor

And elsewhere in divers places, many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins.

June is the Month of the Sacred Heart

O most merciful Jesus, lover of souls, I beseech Thee, through the agony of Thy most holy Heart and through the sorrows of Thy Immaculate Mother, wash in Thy Blood the sinners of the whole world who are now in their agony and will die today.

Tuesday is the Day dedicated to the Holy Angels

Tuesdays, in addition to honoring the Angels, are the day for honoring the Holy Face and honoring St. Anthony of Padua. On the Tuesday after St. Anthony's death, the day his funeral cortege took his body to the church, many miracles took place, so this day is commemorated in his honor. A special Novena to St. Martha is also made on nine consecutive Tuesdays (or on all Tuesdays) by some Catholics.

XIII. PRIVATIS DIEBUS QUALITER AGANTUR MATUTINI

12 Plane agenda matutina vel vespertina non transeat aliquando nisi in ultimo per ordinem oratio dominica, omnibus audientibus, dicatur a priore, propter scandalorum spinas quae oriri solent,

13 ut conventi per ipsius orationis sponsionem qua dicunt: Dimitte nobis sicut et nos dimittimus, purgent se ab huiusmodi vitio.

14 Ceteris vero agendis, ultima pars eius orationis dicatur, ut ab omnibus respondeatur: Sed libera nos a malo.

CHAPTER 13: HOW LAUDS ARE CELEBRATED ON ORDINARY WEEKDAYS,

12 Most certainly the celebration of Lauds and Vespers should never pass by without the Lord’s Prayer said aloud at the end by the Superior for all to hear, because of the thorns of scandal which are likely to spring up:

13 so that the brothers, by means of the promise they make in that prayer which says Forgive us as we forgive (Matt 6:12), may purge themselves of this sort of vice.

14 But at the other offices, only the last part of this prayer is sung aloud, so that the response may be offered by all: But deliver us from evil (Matt 6:13).
