Team Parolin-Erdö but at what price?
Vatican: Burke's house, the epicenter of conservative meetings, who are squeezing down their chances, while the Parolin-Ërdo tandem is expected to be accepted
The Secretary of State could reach the Sistine Chapel with around 45 endorsements

In 2023, the Pope withdrew his appointment as a senior official in the Curia, and he was forced to leave his apartment on Via Rusticucci, a few steps from St. Peter's Square. It appears that Burke will continue to live in the luxurious residence (where high-ranking members of the Curia often stay), although now paying for it out of his own pocket.
Ultra summit at Cardinal Burke's home: as reported by La Stampa and confirmed by RD, the American cardinal, whose salary was cut by Francis and who was forced to pay for his own accommodation, received a group of cardinals on May 1, taking advantage of the day off from general congregations on International Labour Day.
As you may recall, in 2023 the Pope withdrew his appointment as a senior Curia official and forced him to leave his apartment on Via Rusticucci, a few steps from St. Peter's Square. It appears that Burke will continue to live in the luxurious residence (where senior Curia figures often stay), although now paying for it out of his own pocket. Or from the pockets of his benefactors: the American cardinal was a frequent collaborator of Steve Bannon and the MAGA movement, one of the major lobbying groups in this pre-conclave.
Despite the intrigues, the truth is that the ultra-conservative group (from which Cardinal Rouco Varela appears to have withdrawn, having returned to Rome for the time being and not expected at the church of Montserrat, where he resides when he travels to the Eternal City) is beginning to realize the difficulty of imposing a purely traditional candidate who would reverse the reforms undertaken by Francis's pontificate. The "Bergoglio legacy," at least regarding synodality, priority for the poor and discarded, and dialogue with those who are alienated, will continue.
Despite this, and having convinced themselves that this is not the time for an "anti-Bergoglio" on the Papal throne, the leaders of the ultra-conservative sector (Burke, Sarah, Müller, Zen, Stella...) could be trying to rally their votes around the candidate who, as of today, could garner the most support before entering the Sistine Chapel, and who is none other than Pietro Parolin.
According to our sources, the Secretary of State could arrive at the Conclave with around 45 votes, 15 more than the candidate with the most votes in the first election in 2013, Monsignor Scola (Bergoglio was rising after the first count with 26). Not enough, but still very important, especially if a candidate from the sector that supports deepening the renewal undertaken by Francis does not emerge from the outset. This is where the ultra-conservative group would come in, potentially gathering around a dozen votes (there are more people over 80 in this group than those who will enter the Sistine Chapel) on the condition (unwritten, as such pacts are expressly prohibited by the rules of the conclave) of electing Peter Ërdo as Secretary of State.
From Burke's house, online messages are reportedly being sent to cardinals, but also to the media, following the criteria outlined on Edward Pentin's website (https://collegeofcardinalsreport.com/), as a traffic light, about their role in defending doctrine: the ordination of female deacons, the blessing of homosexual couples, optional celibacy, Latin Masses, the Vatican-China agreement, or the project for a "synodal" Church.
Cathcon: The Church will pay a heavy price if synodality is allowed to survive in its present form and if the China agreement stays in place. Should be said, it would be much better for those involved in synod instead of talking about the poor in a patronising way actually transformed their lives to serving the poor in a radical way. That is a real lay movement.
The final logic of this would be to drop Parolin, to make way for Erdö.
"Any speculation of a pre-conclave deal between Hungarian Cardinal Péter Erdö and former Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin is totally false. Cardinal Erdö has engaged in no such discussions." pic.twitter.com/Bdbae9txHd
