Pope Leo XIV, Robert Francis Prevost, performed various acts of kindness during his apostolic work in Peru. One of these was blessing the streets of Chiclayo during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he served as bishop of that city. The Supreme Pontiff, accompanied by parish priests from the Diocese, walked through the streets while praying for the Peruvian people.
The exact moment he performed this action in Chiclayo was recorded by the cameras of members of the Catholic Church. These images have been shared on social media after Robert Prevost was elected as the new pope
Priest Carlos López spoke about the actions of the new Pope Leo XIV during the COVID-19 pandemic. He indicated that the Supreme Pontiff was concerned about the health of all Peruvians and revealed that he tried to obtain oxygen tanks for people in vulnerable situations.
"He was very close to the humble. Even during the coronavirus pandemic, he was very concerned about people, trying to get them help," he stated in an interview with Latina Televisión.
He also recounted that when he was appointed apostolic administrator in Peru, he listened to the requests of Catholics. "He was very close to the clergy, the religious, and all the people who work here. In my experience, he was very close to the humble people," he said.
Pope Robert Prevost in his last interview in Peru
Before bidding farewell to Peru, Pope Robert Prevost gave an interview to the media. The Supreme Pontiff asked citizens to draw closer to Jesus Christ and urged the authorities to listen and respond to the demands of Peruvians. He also confessed that it will be difficult for him to leave Peru.
"I have been in Chiclayo for eight years, and it will be difficult for me to leave here, to leave people, communities, and the Church that is experiencing this joy of following Jesus Christ. I will always seek to be aware of this service of love that has developed during this time and to continue as a missionary, which is what God commands me to do," he said.
